Hélio Gracie was born on 1 October 1913 in Belém, Brazil, and is the co-founder of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and one of the most influential martial artists in history. Together with his brother Carlos Gracie, he adapted traditional Japanese Judo and Jiu-Jitsu into a ground-based fighting system that allowed a smaller, weaker person to defeat a larger, stronger opponent through leverage, technique and positional control.
As a frail child unable to train the more physical Judo methods, Hélio developed modifications that emphasised technique over strength - forming the philosophical and technical core of BJJ. He became a formidable fighter himself, taking on challengers from across the martial arts world in open challenge matches ('vale-tudo') throughout the 1930s to 1950s.
The Gracie family's BJJ was brought to global attention when Hélio's son Royce Gracie won the first three UFC tournaments in 1993-1994, shocking the world by defeating fighters much larger than himself. This moment triggered the modern MMA revolution and made BJJ the most influential grappling art in combat sports.
Hélio Gracie died on 29 January 2009, aged 95, but his legacy defines the ground game of every MMA fighter competing today.
