Sanda (also known as Sanshou - 'free fighting') is the full-contact combat sport branch of Chinese Wushu. Developed by the Chinese military in the 1950s and formalised as a competitive sport in 1979, Sanda combines punching, kicking, clinch work and throwing into a dynamic stand-up fighting system. It is one of Asia's most popular combat sports and the foundation of China's rapidly growing MMA scene. Governed internationally by the IWUF, Sanda is contested at the World Wushu Championships and Asian Games.
Sanda's roots lie in traditional Chinese martial arts - particularly the striking systems of Northern and Southern Shaolin, and the wrestling art of Shuai Jiao. After 1949 the PRC developed Sanda as China's modern full-contact combat system, formalised competitively in 1979. By the 1990s Chinese Sanda fighters were competing in K-1 and kickboxing internationally.
Competition takes place on a raised Lei Tai platform. Points scored for punches, kicks and takedowns. A fighter thrown off the platform loses a point. The throwing component - drawn from Shuai Jiao - distinguishes Sanda from pure kickboxing and gives it a unique tactical dimension.
UFC Strawweight Champion Zhang Weili - China's first UFC champion - built her striking on Sanda before adding wrestling and BJJ. Her success has inspired a generation of Chinese combat sports athletes and proved Sanda's effectiveness as an MMA base.
Sessions cover: straight punches, roundhouse and front kicks, side and spinning back kicks, clinch entries and throws (shoulder throw, hip throw, leg trips), and Lei Tai edge awareness. The combination of striking and throwing makes Sanda excellent cross-training for kickboxers seeking clinch skills and MMA fighters wanting stand-up versatility.
