Floyd Patterson was born on 4 January 1935 in Waco, North Carolina, and passed away on 11 May 2006. Olympic gold medallist (Helsinki, 1952) and the first heavyweight champion to regain the title after losing it. At just 21 years old, Patterson became the youngest heavyweight world champion in history when he knocked out Archie Moore in 1956 - a record that stood for decades until Mike Tyson broke it. He lost the title to Ingemar Johansson in 1959 in a shocking upset, but came back the following year to knock Johansson out and reclaim the crown - the first heavyweight ever to do so. Patterson was known for his exceptional speed, peek-a-boo defensive style (developed under legendary trainer Cus D'Amato), and his quiet dignity outside the ring. He later served as chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission, giving back to the sport that made him.

They said I was the most humble champion. I just wanted to be the best.
