Jon Bluming
Jon Bluming (1933-2018) was born in Amsterdam. One of the most important figures in the history of European martial arts - a judo 6th dan, the first European to reach 7th dan in Kyokushin Karate, and a direct student of both Kyuzo Mifune (judo) and Mas Oyama (Kyokushin).
He was among the very first Westerners to train under Mas Oyama in Japan and became a key figure in bringing Kyokushin Karate to Europe. His technical knowledge, combined with a fierce competitive personality and genuine street-fighting toughness, made him a formidable force and a respected instructor.
Bluming trained and influenced generations of European fighters, and his gym in Amsterdam produced some of the Netherlands' most important combat sports figures. He also had a career as an actor, appearing in Dutch films and TV productions.
His legacy as a pioneer who built the bridge between Japanese martial arts and European combat sports is unquestioned.
