At the age of 16, Royers began his martial arts journey by practicing karate. His dedication and talent ensured that he quickly achieved success and became Dutch champion no fewer than nine times. His dominance extended beyond national borders, as he also achieved notable results at the Karate World Championships in 1979, 1980, 1982 and 1984, as well as at the World Games in 1981.

While Royers excelled in karate, he also ventured into the world of amateur boxing, demonstrating his versatility and adaptability as a fighter. His dedication to honing his skills in multiple disciplines further cemented his reputation as a formidable force in martial arts.
