Since the first boxing gloves were made, there has always been a fundamental design flaw. More precisely, the point where the glove's striking area met the wrist shaft was never exactly where the boxer's wrist was located.

Before the invention of the Wrist Lock by Rival, most hook-and-loop gloves on the market had just one simple flap that offered little wrist support.

When Rival produced their very first heavy bag glove, the RB1—a hugely popular glove that has remained virtually unchanged since its introduction in 2003—it was not only the first time a high-quality glove was made without leather, but also the first time the new Wrist Lock system was integrated.
