Key choices when selecting protectors for martial arts

When choosing the right protector, there are a few things to consider. Below we briefly explain per category what to keep in mind — so you can quickly make the right choice.

Which handwraps do I need as a martial artist?

Handwraps are one of the most essential forms of protection for every boxer or kickboxer — they protect your wrists, knuckles, and hand joints during every training session.

Polyester-cotton handwraps The classic choice for experienced athletes. Polyester-cotton handwraps (3.5–5 metres) combine durability with light stretch, allowing them to wrap comfortably around your hand and wrist while providing maximum support. They are washable and reusable. Top brands: XPRT handwraps, Winning handwraps, and Rival handwraps. Or view all handwraps at Fight2Win.

Gel-wraps and inner gloves For athletes who want to put them on quickly, gel-wraps are ideal. They provide less support than handwraps but are much quicker to put on.

Knuckle guards A knuckle guard is a soft protector worn over the knuckles, in combination with your regular handwraps. Ideal for athletes who want extra knuckle protection when recovering from injuries or when you punch hard. View all knuckle guards.

What is a mouthguard, and do I need one?

A mouthguard protects your teeth, jaw, and lips during contact. A mouthguard is mandatory for every sparring session—and strongly recommended for every contact training session.

Which mouthguard should I choose? Most athletes start with a thermoplastic mouthguard: you mold it yourself by briefly dipping it in hot water and biting down on it. This already provides a good fit at an affordable price.

For maximum comfort and protection, choose a mouthguard from a specialized brand such as Shock Doctor or SafeJawz.

Mouthguards braces Do you wear braces? Then you need a special mouthguard for braces that provides room for the braces without being too tight. Fight2Win offers mouthguards braces in various sizes and brands.

How do I choose the right shin guard?

Shin guards are essential for kickboxing, thai boxing, and Krav Maga. A good shin guard protects both the shinbone and the instep and is suitable for both training and sparring.

Shin guards by sport

  • Kickboxing: shin guards kickboxing
  • Krav Maga: shin guards Krav Maga
  • Taekwondo or as extra protection over your shin guard: shin guards without footpiece

Pay attention to the size: too small offers insufficient protection, while too large is uncomfortable.

Which headgear is right for my sport?

Choosing headgear depends on your sport and training goals:

Open-face headgear — for boxing For boxing, choose an open-face model with good cheek and jaw protection. This type offers optimal visibility and is suitable for both training and competition. View our full range of headgear.

Headgear with a facebar or full-face — for kickboxing and MMA In kickboxing and MMA, kicks to the head can also occur. A model with extra cheekbone or nose protection offers more protection. For maximum protection, choose headgear with a facebar.

Headgear for Taekwondo Taekwondo has specific requirements for head protection. View our range of Taekwondo headgear — specially suited to the rules and techniques of this sport.

Headgear for children For young athletes, we offer specially adapted headgear for children in smaller sizes and lighter weights.

Fight2Win has headgear for all levels — from beginners to competitors — from top brands such as Winning, Rival, Cleto Reyes and Twins.

Which groinguard do I need?

There are two main types of groinguards, depending on your sport:

Groinguards for kickboxing, MMA, Krav Maga and Taekwondo For these sports, a standard cup with a hard shell is sufficient. Choose a model with an elastic band or a version that fits over your trousers. At Fight2Win, you will find groinguards & cups for all martial arts.

Groinguards for (classic) boxing In boxing, punches to the groin and kidneys are allowed, meaning you need more protection. Choose a kidney and groin protector for boxing with extra kidney protection. Top models include Cleto Reyes, Rival and Winning — Winning is the absolute top model for boxers who train frequently. A groinguard is mandatory in competitions.

Are knee and elbow pads necessary for martial arts?

For MMA, grappling, and Krav Maga, knee pads and elbow pads are highly recommended, especially on hard mats. They prevent abrasions and protect the joints during falls and throws.

Knee pads Knee pads are essential for ground work and throws. They protect the knee joint during hard landings and sliding movements on the mat. Ideal for MMA, grappling, and Krav Maga. View all knee pads.

Elbow pads Elbow pads prevent abrasions and protect the joint during falling techniques and ground work. Essential for athletes who regularly train on hard surfaces. View all elbow pads.

What protective gear is available for feet and ankles?

Ankle guards Ankle guards provide stability to the ankle joint and reduce the risk of injury during twisting movements and kicks. They are lightweight, comfortable to wear under your shin guard, and suitable for both training and competition in kickboxing and thai boxing. View all ankle guards.

Safety kicks — especially for Taekwondo Safety kicks protect the instep during contact and are particularly mandatory in Taekwondo competitions. They are also suitable as additional protection for other martial arts. View all safety kicks.

What protective equipment do we have specifically for coaches and top trainers?

Coaches and trainers who actively do pad work or support top fighters need specific protection.

Belly pads — for boxing A belly pad absorbs punches during pad training and is essential for every active boxing trainer. Choose a model with good shock absorption and a secure fastening. View all belly pads.

Belly & thigh pads — for kickboxing and MMA In kickboxing and MMA, the legs are also targeted with kicks. Belly & thigh pads offer extra protection for both the torso and thighs—ideal for trainers who do intensive mitt work. View all belly & thigh pads.

What is the difference between a boxing mouthguard and a mouthguard for braces?

A standard mouthguard protects the teeth and jaw and is suitable for athletes without braces. A mouthguard for braces is specially designed for athletes who wear orthodontic braces—brands such as Shock Doctor, SafeJawz and Opro offer specific models for this purpose.

What types of protective gear does Fight2Win sell?

Fight2Win offers a complete range of protective gear for all martial arts, including headgear, shin guards, groinguards, handwraps, mouthguards, knuckle guards, ankle guards, belly pads, knee pads, elbow pads and taekwondo safety kicks. How many pairs of handwraps do I need?

We recommend having at least 2 pairs on hand—this way, you always have a clean pair ready while the other is in the wash. Athletes who train daily benefit from 3 or more pairs so they always have dry, fresh handwraps.

What is the best way to wash boxing handwraps?

You can best wash handwraps by placing them in a laundry bag or bra bag and washing them in the washing machine at 30°C or lower. Hand-washing is actually even better.

It is important to fasten the hook-and-loop closure before washing to prevent it from catching on other clothes or the handwraps themselves. After washing, let the handwraps air-dry naturally. Do not put them in the dryer, as they may shrink and crease unnecessarily.

  • Partially roll up the handwraps and place them in a laundry bag or bra bag.
  • Wash the handwraps in the washing machine at a maximum of 30°C or hand-wash them.
  • Let the handwraps air-dry, preferably hung up at full length.
  • Do not put the handwraps in the dryer.

Extra tips:

  • Wash the handwraps regularly (after every training session) to keep them hygienically clean and fresh.
  • You can use a mild detergent if desired, but rinse the handwraps thoroughly to prevent soap residue.
  • Let the handwraps dry completely after washing before using them again.

What do you wear ankle guards for?

Ankle guards are worn to provide additional ankle support. Thanks to the extra reinforcement from the ankle guards, the risk of injuries is reduced. They provide a compression effect and also strengthen the vulnerable metatarsal bones.

What is the difference between sock-style and pre-shaped shin guards?

Sleeve-style shin guards are pulled on like a sock—lightweight, compact, and ideal for young children and athletes who move a lot. Molded shin guards (such as the Twins SGL7) have a hard shell with hook-and-loop fastening, offering more protection against powerful kicks and making them better suited to intense sparring. For beginners and children, the sleeve-style model is the most practical choice.
