Thai pads & pao
Thai pads (Thais: PAO) or armpads are primarily designed to absorb hard kicks. They are mainly used in kickboxing, thai boxing, MMA, muay thai, and many other martial arts.

Thai pads belong in every serious gym where training focuses on hard kicks and power kicks. High-quality armpads, such as the Twins TKP, can absorb the kicks of even the heaviest heavyweights.
There are cheap armpads that sometimes suffice, but when you have serious caliber men like Alex Pereira, Jamal Ben Saddik, Rico Verhoeven, or other professional kickboxers, you want solid equipment.
Thai pads are elongated cushions held by a trainer/partner during a training session. They are usually made of foam padding and have a sturdy exterior of leather, synthetic leather, or microfiber to protect the trainer who absorbs the strikes.
Thai pads are designed to help the practitioner practice powerful kicks, such as cross-kicks, high kicks, knee strikes, and elbow strikes. They offer more cushioning and protection than regular kicking shields or punching mitts for both the trainer and the practitioner, as they withstand more powerful impact.
Thai pads are also often used in group training involving multiple practitioners.
With better kick pads, you can kick with full force without causing injuries to the fighter, training partner, or trainer. Besides hard kicks, you can also properly practice knees and elbows on thai pads.
The elongated pads are relatively heavy but also portable and easy to use, making them ideal for one-on-one training sessions. We have weighed all armpads in our assortment and indicated this in a handy size chart per product.
Types of thai pads
There are different types of thai pads that mainly differ in build quality, size, materials, handles, weight, ergonomics, and closures.
Size of thai pads:
- Medium
- Large
Armpads from different brands are usually about the same size and always cover the entire forearm of the user. Twins distinguishes in the top-quality TKP series between a slightly smaller and a large model. This is mainly a matter of personal preference. It also makes a difference in the relatively substantial weight.
Handles and closures:
Almost all thai pads have a grip bar to hold the pads and multiple Velcro closures. There is a lot of difference in build quality in this part, and the cheaper models are clearly distinguishable from the really sturdy kicking shields.
Ergonomics:
Here too, the better – often more expensive – models clearly stand out from the simple models.
Good thai pads have an ergonomic cushion on which the trainer’s (holder’s) forearms rest, providing good protection against heavy impact. They are usually also slightly curved (in a curve), which helps distribute the impact of hard kicks well and prevents the thai pads from breaking in the middle.
Weight of thai pads:
This is not necessarily a matter of build quality. Some very light thai pads (such as the King Pro Revo KP) are extremely durable.
Light thai pads are especially comfortable for trainers during prolonged use, but usually heavier pads are preferred. These are generally sturdier. Also, it is unlikely that training with thai pads will be done for hours on end, as might be the case with smaller punching mitts.
Advantages of thai pads:
- Training at full power
- Maximum protection for the holder
- Suitable for kicks, knee techniques, and elbows
The above points are just a selection of the benefits you can gain from training with thai pads. In short, every serious kickboxing trainer should have a set of thai pads!
