Thai pads & pao
Thai pads (Thai: PAO) or arm pads are mainly intended to absorb hard kicks . They are mainly used in kickboxing, Thai boxing, MMA, Muay Thai and many more martial arts.
Read moreThai pads belong in every serious gym where hard kicks and power kicks are trained. The good quality arm pads, like the Twins TKP, can absorb the kicks of even the biggest heavyweights.
There are cheap arm pads and sometimes they will do just fine, but when you have guys of serious caliber like Alex Pereira, Jamal Ben Saddik, Rico Verhoeven or other professional kickboxers then you want real equipment .
Thai pads are oblong shields held by a trainer/partner during a training session. They are usually made of foam padding and have a tough exterior of leather, leatherette or microfiber to provide protection for the trainer taking the blows.
Thai pads are designed to help the practitioner practice powerful kicks such as cross kicks, high kicks, knee strikes and elbow strikes. They offer more cushioning and protection than regular kicking pads or focus mitts for both the trainer and the practitioner, as they can withstand more powerful impacts. Thai pads are also often used in group training where multiple practitioners are involved.
The better kick pads allow you to kick with full force without causing injuries to the fighter, training partner or trainer. In addition to hard kicks, you can also practice knees and elbows correctly on Thai pads.
The elongated pads are relatively heavy but also portable and easy to use, making them ideal for one-on-one training sessions . We have weighed the weight of all the arm pads in our range and indicated this in a handy size chart per product.
Types of Thai pads
There are different types of Thai pads that mainly differ in build quality, size, materials, handles, weight, ergonomics and closure.
Thai pads size:
- Medium
- Big
Arm pads from different brands are usually about the same size and cover the entire forearm of the user anyway. Twins has distinguished in the top quality TKP series in a slightly smaller and a large model. This is mainly a matter of personal preference. Of course, it also makes a difference in the relatively high weight.
Handles and closures:
Almost all Thai pads have a grip bar to hold the pads and multiple velcro closures. There is a lot of difference in build quality on this part and the cheaper models are very clearly distinguishable from the really sturdy kick pads.
Ergonomics:
Here too, the better – often more expensive – models clearly distinguish themselves from the simple models. Good Thai pads have an ergonomic cushion on which the forearms of the trainer (indicator) rest and are therefore well protected against heavy impact. Usually they are also slightly curved (in a curve) so that the impact of hard kicks is well distributed and the Thai pads do not break in the middle.
Weight Thai pads:
This is not necessarily a question of build quality. There are some very light Thai pads (such as King Pro Revo KP) that are extremely durable. Light Thai pads are especially nice for long-term use by a trainer, but usually heavier pads are preferred. These are generally sturdier. Also, you will not easily train for hours with Thai pads in a row, as may be the case with smaller focus mitts.
