Frequently asked questions — Headgear boxing

What is the benefit of good headgear?

Martial arts such as karate, taekwondo, boxing, kickboxing and MMA all involve a degree of contact with practitioners' heads. Wearing a good headgear in these martial arts is essential for the safety of the practitioner.

We especially want to emphasize that good headgear not only provides good protection, but also stays securely in place and does not get in the way!

Features of headgear:

  • Protection against head injuries
  • Eye protection
  • Increased confidence
  • Training without holding back
  • Contributes to a culture of safety (awareness of important protective equipment)

Why do some headgear have an open chin?

Maximum visibility, minimal obstruction.

A headgear in combat sports such as boxing often has an open chin to improve the fighter's comfort and mobility.

This design allows fighters to see all incoming punches, especially hooks and uppercuts, without being hindered by thick padding.

The open design also allows for better head movement and countering opportunities during sparring sessions and training.

Some key benefits of open-chin headgear:

  • Improved visibility: an open-face design provides a wider and clearer field of vision, which is crucial for anticipating punches and reacting quickly, especially during training or sparren.
  • Improved mobility: the smaller amount of padding around the chin and cheeks allows for smoother head movement, enabling fighters to evade punches more effectively.
  • Focus on countering: by maintaining a clear view of their opponent, fighters can better anticipate and counter their attacks.
  • Fewer restrictions: open headgear is generally preferred for its greater comfort and breathability during intense training sessions.

Please note:

While open headgear prioritizes visibility and agility, it naturally provides less protection for the face, particularly the chin and nose, compared with headgear featuring a face bar or cheek protection.

However, the open design is often preferred because it allows fighters to sparren and train without feeling overly restricted in their freedom of movement. Many fighters are not fans of overly "bulky" protective gear anyway.

Why do some headgear have a closed chin?

Maximum protection.

Headgear with a closed chin and cheek protection provides (after headgear with a face bar) maximum protection by covering the entire face, including the chin, cheeks, and forehead.

This headgear design minimizes the risk of cuts, bruises, and swelling from strikes, particularly to the chin, eyes, and cheeks.

While open headgear prioritizes visibility, headgear with a closed chin prioritizes injury prevention, especially during intensive and hard training or sparring sessions.

Benefits of headgear with a closed chin:

  • Comprehensive protection: headgear with a closed chin and cheek protector provides comprehensive protection against punches and kicks, including strikes aimed at the chin, jaw, and cheeks.
  • Injury prevention: by covering the chin, this headgear helps prevent injuries such as cuts, swelling, and potential concussions caused by strikes.
  • Suitable for intensive training: this type of headgear is particularly popular during intensive sparring or training sessions.
  • Visibility trade-off: although closed-chin headgear may slightly limit overall visibility compared with open-face designs, it offers many fighters a good balance between protection and visibility.

Types of headgear:

There are several types of headgear, including fully open-face headgear, open-chin headgear, closed-chin headgear with cheek protection, and full protection with a face bar.

How long does headgear last?

This depends on how often you train with it and how well you care for your headgear.

As a general rule, you can use headgear for at least 1 to 2 years before it needs replacing. If you keep it clean, it will stay fresh and headgear can last much longer! By then, it will already have protected, supported, and saved you many times!

Top-quality headgear such as Winning can last for years before showing any signs of wear.

Collections

Are headgear for boxing and kickboxing the same?

Yes.

You can use the same headgear for boxing, kickboxing, thai boxing, and even MMA.

Both are available with an open chin, closed chin, cheekbone protection, and face-bar protection. The choice is personal.

How should headgear (for boxing) fit?

Headgear should fit snugly while remaining reasonably comfortable and allowing full visibility without slipping.

The headgear should sit securely on the forehead, just above the eyebrows, without obstructing vision or breathing.

The headgear should preferably also be adjustable to ensure a good fit and prevent it from shifting during training or competition.
