Wing Chun is a Chinese martial art that specializes in close-range combat. Wing-Chun was originally passed from teacher to student orally rather than through written documentation. This makes it difficult to determine the precise origin. Attempts have been made to trace the history by looking at the specific purposes of the techniques used. The first stories about the martial arts emerge in independent documentation recorded during the century of Wing Chun master Leung Jan.
There is a legend about a young woman named Yim Wing Chun. After she rejects a marriage proposal from a local warlord, he in turn says that he will withdraw his proposal if she manages to defeat him in battle. She asks a local nun, Ng Mui, to teach her how to box and the style they develop allows her to beat the warlord. She then marries the man she truly loves and teaches him the style he names after her.
