14 oz or 16 oz. The right weight for men’s boxing gloves.

Men generally choose heavier weights than women, depending on body weight and use:

Guideline based on body weight:

  • up to 65 kg - 12 oz (training) or 14 oz (sparren)
  • 65–80 kg - 14 oz (training and sparren) - the most commonly chosen size
  • 80–95 kg - 16 oz - the standard weight for men
  • over 95 kg - 16 oz or 18 oz

Use:

  • Bag work and pads - 12 oz or 14 oz is sufficient
  • Sparren - always at least 14 oz, preferably 16 oz for your partner's safety
  • Heavy sparren / professional - 16 oz or 18 oz

Rule of thumb: nearly all men train with 14 oz or 16 oz. A few who are lighter and smaller choose 12 oz.

Frequently asked questions — Men's boxing gloves

What is the difference between bag gloves and boxing gloves?

Bag gloves and Boxing gloves are both used during (kick)boxing training, but they serve different purposes and have different features.

Bag gloves are specifically designed for punching bag and pad training. They have less padding and often less wrist support. This provides more feedback and allows for faster combinations.

Boxing gloves, on the other hand, are used for sparring and potentially competitions, with an emphasis on protection and safety through thicker padding and greater wrist support.

Bag glove features:

  • Purpose: specifically designed for punching bags and pad training, to promote speed and precision.
  • Padding: less padding compared with Boxing gloves, providing more feedback on impact. The materials have a much higher density to withstand repeated impact.
  • Wrist support: less wrist support, to promote proper punching technique. However, this is not always the case; many Rival bag gloves have excellent wrist support (Wrist-Lock 2).
  • Fit: a smaller, tighter fit for better wrist stabilization.
  • Weight: lighter, for faster punches and combinations. Usually 8 oz or 10 oz.
  • Design: usually features an unattached thumb and sometimes no hook-and-loop closure or laces for quick putting on and removal.
How do I use disinfectant spray for boxing gloves?

After every training session, spray a small amount into the boxing gloves. One spray is sufficient.

If you also use a deodorizer (which we recommend), we advise letting the boxing gloves dry first using the deodorizers, then using the disinfectant spray.

Usage tips:

  • Hold the can 5 to 15 cm above the surface and move the spray quickly over the item you want to treat.
  • Don't leave your smelly sports gear lying around for too long; spray it immediately after exercising.
How does a "deodorizer" work?

Deodorizers for boxing gloves are, simply put, moisture absorbers specially designed for boxing gloves. You put them in your boxing gloves after use. As a result, they dry much faster, so sweat doesn’t get a chance to settle into the lining or padding.

Deodorizers therefore ensure that:

  1. your boxing gloves dry faster
  2. your gloves stay fresher
  3. the lining and padding remain in good condition for longer
Is there a difference between kickboxing gloves and boxing gloves?

No.

Actually, there is no difference.

Some brands are more focused on boxing, while others are more focused on kickboxing and thai boxing.

There are some minor differences, but in practice you can use boxing gloves for kickboxing and kickboxing gloves for boxing.

How do I properly care for my boxing gloves?

Allow your boxing gloves to air-dry after every training session—never store them in a closed bag. Wipe the outside clean with a damp cloth after use. Treat leather gloves regularly with leather cream to prevent them from drying out and cracking. If desired, use a disinfectant spray or place a deodorizer in the gloves to neutralize odors. With proper care, quality gloves will last for many hours of training.

What is the difference between Velcro and lace-up boxing gloves?

Velcro boxing gloves are the most practical choice—you can put them on and take them off yourself without assistance, making them ideal for training and sparring. Lace-up boxing gloves provide a tighter, anatomically perfect fit that cannot be achieved with Velcro—the standard among professional boxers in competitions and intensive training. For everyday use, Velcro is the most practical option; for maximum fit and performance, lace-up gloves are the better choice.
