1. Boil Water: Fill a saucepan with at least 25cm (10 inches) of water and bring to the boil.
2. Soak the mouthguard: After removing the boiling water from the heat source, let it sit for 15 seconds. Then immerse the mouthguard in the water for 140 seconds to soften it.
3. Remove with a spoon: Carefully lift the bit out of the water with a foamed spoon, taking care to ensure security and maintain its shape.
4. Cool slightly: Hold the bit by the sides and edges to maintain its shape for fitting teeth. Shake off excess water and let it air cool for 5 seconds or quickly rinse under running water for 1-2 seconds.
5. Align and Adjust: Align the center of the tray with the centerline of your upper teeth. Use a mirror for better accuracy. Over the next 5-10 seconds, begin pressing the tray onto your back teeth with your thumbs, then onto your front teeth. Make sure the inner walls of the tray are pressed firmly against your teeth and gums, expanding the inner rim and gel against the upper palate while using your fingers to adjust the outer circumference for a snug fit.
6. Bite and Shape: Close your mouth, bite down firmly to create deep impressions of your teeth into the mouthguard. Press your tongue against the inner walls and suck firmly for 10 seconds. Continue to apply pressure around the entire circumference of the mouthguard with your fingers for at least 60 seconds, using a firm bite. This pressure helps form a tight fit as the material cools, conforming closely to your teeth and gum line.
7. Cool in ice water: After ensuring the tray is molded correctly, submerge it in ice water for at least 2 minutes to set the mold. Remove, shake off excess water, and dry with a towel. Test the fit by placing the tray in your mouth; it should sit securely on your upper teeth even when your mouth is open.
8. Adjust as necessary: If the fit is not perfect, repeat steps 1 through 7 to make any necessary adjustments, ensuring the mouthguard provides the best possible protection and comfort.
