What is the difference between punching mitts, focus pads, Thai pads, and kicking shields?
Punching mitts and focus pads are compact targets for focused pad work, usually involving punches or light precision techniques. Thai pads are held against the arm and are designed for combinations that also include kicks.
Punching shields provide a larger target for punching combinations. A kicking shield is designed for kick training and has a different shape and grip. Size alone does not determine how much impact is safe; adjust your technique and intensity to the specific pad and the person holding it.
You use punching mitts to practice punches, combinations, timing, accuracy, and responding to cues from the pad holder. Depending on the drill, you can also work on footwork and defense.
Choose pads that suit the strikes being practiced and fit the pad holder's hands. Pads designed for punches are not necessarily suitable for all kicking techniques. Good coordination is still essential; pad training carries a risk of injury.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of light or heavy punching mitts?
Lightweight punching mitts are easier to hold up for longer. Heavier mitts may have more material or padding, but weight alone does not tell you how much cushioning or durability you get.
Compare weight alongside size, padding, grip and the exercises the mitts are designed for. Use the model specifications where available; not every product has a fully verified weight chart yet.
A small focus mitt provides a smaller target and therefore requires greater accuracy. It works well for slow precision drills and fast, controlled combinations.
Smaller does not automatically mean less strain on the holder or more cushioning. Compare padding, grip and weight too; small focus mitts are not necessarily suitable for hard power punches.
What are hybrid pads?
Hybrid pads combine features of punching mitts and Thai pads. They usually offer a larger striking surface than compact focus mitts and can be used for a wider range of drills.
Which punches, kicks or knees they can handle depends on the specific model. Hybrid is not a fixed weight class or a guarantee that they can absorb every technique at full force.
