Boxing gloves
Buy boxing gloves? If you need a good pair of new boxing gloves , you've come to the right place. With years of experience in kickboxing and boxing, we know what's really GOOD.
Lees meerKey Choices When Choosing Boxing Gloves
There are a number of factors that are important when choosing your new pair of boxing gloves. It deserves your attention, because it is the most important “tool” during every boxing, kickboxing and cardio-boxing training. We explain everything as well as possible in the following pieces.
- What size or weight boxing gloves should I choose?
- Which type of closure do I choose?
- Which material do I prefer?
- What type of padding can I choose?
- Which brand of boxing gloves suits my needs?
- How long do boxing gloves last?
- How do I maintain my boxing gloves?
Choosing the size or weight of boxing gloves
One of the most important first choices when choosing your first pair of new boxing gloves is which weight you can best take. Boxing gloves almost always go by weight measurements expressed in ounces (oz) - an English weight measurement - and therefore not so much by classic sizes . You will therefore often see 12 oz, 14 oz or 16 oz on gloves and the corresponding choices in our webshop.
Although it is not really the “size” in terms of fit, it is almost always the case that heavier boxing gloves also have a larger hand compartment . However, this does not necessarily have to be the case! Professionals also compete with 8 oz or 10 oz, which are actually usually sold as “children’s sizes” in stores. These are usually special gloves and probably also chosen from the most expensive segment or custom-made for the boxer or fighter in question.
The rule of thumb is: “the heavier the person in question, the heavier the glove to be used is desired” . A heavier boxing glove generally has more padding (filling) and is therefore also safer for the hands and for the training partner. Trainers also generally prefer that you have heavier boxing gloves than lighter ones.
Each boxing glove in our collection has a unique size chart , specific to that brand and model series. So be sure to consult this size chart!
In short, youth train with 6oz, 8oz or 10oz boxing gloves. Women usually choose 12oz or 14oz and men often do best with a 14oz or 16oz. We will continue this further with an example table at the bottom of this article.
Type of closure of the boxing gloves
There are actually only 2 types of boxing glove closures to choose from:
- Hook and loop closure (Velcro)
- Classic lace-up closure
Most people buy boxing gloves with a velcro closure because of the superior ease of use. Beginners almost always buy boxing gloves with a velcro closure, but many advanced and (semi-)professionals also choose this. A lace-up closure is almost impossible to put on without help.
However, there are many innovations in the field of hook and loop closures, in which the brands Hayabusa and Rival are leading the way. They have ingenious systems (Dual-X, Ergo Xtreme Strap and Wrist Lock 2 among others) that imitate the tight fit around the wrists of a lace closure as closely as possible, without the disadvantages of the ease of use of lace closures.
However, for professional fighters , nothing beats the classic lacing , because it is always superior and can be made to fit the fighter's wrists. Here too, Rival has unique innovations in which even traditional lacing has been further improved in more modern systems (Angled Lace Track and Ergo Lace Track for example).
Material of the boxing gloves
Many different types of materials are used, especially for the outside of the boxing gloves. The materials chosen also partly determine the price of the gloves. In fact, there is only the choice between synthetic leather/artificial leather and real leather (usually cow leather). But that is too simplistic, because there is of course a great deal of difference in quality between both artificial leather types and leather types. (There are leather sports shoes for 100 euros, but also leather Italian shoes for hundreds of euros).
It used to be easier to say that leather is always better than synthetic materials, but in 2025 that will no longer be the case. Moreover, the leather of a Winning, Di Nardo or Cleto Reyes boxing glove is not the same quality as the leather of a budget leather boxing glove. The more expensive brands use the absolute best quality leather from Italy . This is supple and very durable leather. The Mexican brands use somewhat stiffer leather, which is very sturdy but looks less luxurious.
Many modern manufacturers even prefer their own synthetic materials, which is certainly not comparable to cheap plastic or PU boxing gloves. Hayabusa uses their own patented and extremely strong Vylar-2 , while Rival Boxing Gear uses virtually indestructible Microfiber in their top lines of boxing gloves.
Leather can be maintained, while synthetic materials are usually easier to maintain. In general, leather “breathes” and ventilates better than synthetic material, but with boxing gloves, the materials on the inside are just as important.
Padding of boxing gloves
This is often overlooked when choosing boxing gloves, but in fact this is the essence of a boxing glove: the filling (padding). Ultimately this is what a boxing glove is all about: protecting the hands and the training or sparring partner.
There are considerable differences between brands and even model series. There are “soft” boxing gloves, such as a Twins, King Pro or an XPRT, “harder” boxing gloves such as a Cleto Reyes and Fairtex and boxing gloves that seek a golden mean such as a Rival, Winning and Di Nardo.
One is not necessarily better than the other, but the difference is certainly worth mentioning. Cleto Reyes for example are widely known as “puncher's gloves” that hit hard, while Winning are famous as “pillows” because of the protection of the hands during heavy punches.
The most commonly used material for the padding of modern boxing gloves is foam. There are different types, including latex foam, injected foam and multi-layer foam. Latex foam feels soft and is quite flexible, which allows it to adapt well to the shape of the hand. Cleto Reyes, for example, uses this for all sparring gloves, which allows them to form very well to the user's hands.
Horsehair is almost never used anymore in regular training or sparring boxing gloves. In competition gloves it is definitely still used. You will find this in the competition boxing gloves of Cleto Reyes and the Rival RFX Guerrero's. Rival also has models where they use a combination of foam and horsehair.
Brands of boxing gloves
The choice of brand is not only a matter of quality, but also a matter of personal choice and budget. Some brands, such as Twins and King Pro Boxing, are more associated with kickboxing and Thai boxing (although you can also box “normally” with them), while other brands such as Cleto Reyes, Winning and Rival Boxing Gear are known as “real” boxing brands. Hayabusa is an odd one out with its original MMA origins.
We only sell brands that we stand behind 100%. Our extensive range includes:

Boxing gloves lifespan
“How long do boxing gloves last?” is a frequently asked first question in our store and webshop. It is impossible to give a direct and honest answer to this. For example, how long car tires last also depends on use, as does boxing gloves and kickboxing gloves.
Several factors play a role in the lifespan of boxing gloves. First of all, of course, the quality of the chosen boxing gloves, but especially the training intensity with which they are used and the force used when punching. An 11-year-old girl will generally punch less hard than an adult man of 90 kg.
In general, boxing gloves last between 6 and 12 months when used regularly 2 to 3 times a week . In practice, it can be shorter or longer, but that depends on the intensity of use:
- Number of trainings
- Intensity of the workouts
- Body weight and especially punching power
- Maintenance
If you notice that the padding of the boxing gloves is torn or that you punch through it or that there are tears in the material, it is time to replace them. Do not train with old or defective gloves to prevent injuries.
Maintenance of boxing gloves
Boxing gloves definitely do not have 'eternal life'. Especially people with less experience in martial arts expect boxing gloves to last for years. However, this is not the case at all. To explain it briefly and concisely, you can compare boxing gloves to sneakers. The longer you take good care of your sneakers, the longer they will stay beautiful, but even then they will not last for years.
Leather deserves maintenance and should be greased regularly. Microfiber and the like should be dried and wiped. The inside stays best if you use deodorizers (moisture absorbers) and possibly a maintenance spray against bacteria and odors.
We have written a more extensive blog about maintenance, which you can read here: How to maintain your boxing gloves and keep them fresh .
Difference between boxing gloves, kickboxing gloves and Thai boxing gloves
What is the difference between boxing gloves and kickboxing gloves? Is a question we get asked regularly. Actually, the answer is: nothing. There is no difference between boxing gloves, kickboxing gloves, Thai boxing gloves and gloves for stand-up fighting in MMA and Krav Maga.
You can use all gloves in our range for both boxing and kickboxing . However, some brands are more closely related to kickboxing and Thai boxing, such as the famous Thai brands Twins, King Pro, Booster and Fairtex. Some other brands are more closely linked to classic Western boxing, such as Rival Boxing Gear, Cleto Reyes, Di Nardo and Winning.
In Krav Maga and MMA (standup fighting) regular boxing gloves are often used during training and sparring.
However, some gloves have padding on the palm. During sparring, you can absorb kicks and punches with the inside of your glove. It is therefore mainly extra protection for the palm. The Twins BGN, for example, have this extra padding.
A striking feature of all some Booster and King Pro kickboxing gloves is the extended wrist piece. Some people find it ideal, other people find it annoying. Due to the extra long wrist piece, your wrist is slightly better protected. Your hand can swing less far backwards. If you want to know how this feels, visit our store in Capelle aan den IJssel .
Difference between boxing gloves and bag gloves
There are big differences between (sparring) boxing gloves and bag gloves. The two are as different as an SUV and a sports car.
Bag gloves are used for training on the punching bag. The gloves are specially developed for punching on punching bags. Normal boxing gloves are less suitable for training on the punching bag due to the softer filling. Fight2Win therefore has various top brands of punching bag gloves for intensive punching bag training.
We naturally have a complete collection of bag gloves from different brands and price ranges.
