Handwraps or gel-wraps – the difference and when to choose which

Handwraps (also known as windsels or handwraps) wrap around your hand and wrist yourself - they provide maximum support for the metacarpals and wrist and are essential for intensive sparring and competition training.

Gel-wraps are inner gloves with integrated knuckle padding - on in seconds, with no wrapping experience required.

Gel-wraps are ideal for daily pad training, cardio boxing, and beginners. Many boxers combine both: gel-wraps for light sessions, handwraps for heavy training. Both protect the hands - the choice depends on your type of training, level, and personal preference.

Choosing the right handwrap length – 250, 450 or 530 cm

The length of a handwrap determines how much protection and support you can provide.

250 cm is suitable for children and women with narrow hands—enough for a basic wrap.

450 cm is the standard size for adults and provides enough length for a full wrap of the knuckles, mid-hand, and wrist.

530 cm is for boxers with large hands or those who want extra wrist support. The Rival Mexican Stretch is available in 300, 380, 450, and 530 cm—ideal if you want exactly the right length.

Not sure? Always choose the longer size—it’s better to be too long than too short.

Handwraps and gel-wraps for beginners, women, youth and advanced athletes

Beginners get the best start with XPRT Easy Stretch or Fight2Win Easy Stretch: affordable, slightly elastic, and easy to put on.

Women benefit from the 250 cm version and XPRT's wide range of colors.

Youth fit well with the 250 cm entry-level models.

Advanced boxers choose the Rival Mexican Stretch or Guerrero, the Hayabusa Deluxe , or the handmade Winning rayon handwraps.

For gel-wraps: beginners and cardio athletes should choose XPRT EZ Padding or Hayabusa Quick Gel; advanced athletes who want gel-wraps for light sessions should choose the Rival RGW or Winning KVL-R.

Handwraps and gel-wraps: washing and care—here’s how to do it right

Handwraps wash at 30–40°C in a laundry bag or pillowcase so they do not get tangled.

Always let them air-dry, never put them in the dryer.

Air them out briefly after every training session and do not roll them up immediately.

Cotton handwraps (Cleto Reyes, Twins Special, Winning) require extra care: hand washing is recommended.

Gel-wraps are machine washable at 30°C in a laundry bag; models with a PU outer layer can also be wiped with a damp cloth. Never put them in the dryer—heat damages the gel inserts and elastic.

Proper care significantly extends the lifespan of both products.

Frequently asked questions — Handwraps & gel-wraps

What is polycotton?

Polycotton is a fabric made from a blend of cotton and polyester fibers. The ratio of fibers can vary, but 80% polyester and 20% cotton are often used for handwraps. For our karate and taekwon-do uniforms, the ratio is usually 65% polyester and 35% cotton.

Polycotton combines the benefits of both materials: the breathability of cotton and the durability and quick-drying properties of polyester.

Why is polycotton used?

  • More durable: polyester makes the fabric stronger and more resistant to wear than pure cotton.
  • Wrinkle-resistant: polycotton is much less prone to wrinkling than 100% cotton. This is especially useful for martial arts uniforms, as they require less ironing.
  • Quick-drying: polyester fibers dry faster than cotton, which is useful for sportswear and sports equipment.
  • Economical: polycotton is cheaper than 100% cotton.
  • Versatile: polycotton is suitable for various applications, such as clothing and handwraps.
  • More elastic: handwraps are more comfortable with a little stretch. 100% cotton has no stretch at all.

What is the best way to wash boxing handwraps?

You can best wash handwraps by placing them in a laundry bag or bra bag and washing them in the washing machine at 30°C or lower. Hand-washing is actually even better.

It is important to fasten the hook-and-loop closure before washing to prevent it from catching on other clothes or the handwraps themselves. After washing, let the handwraps air-dry naturally. Do not put them in the dryer, as they may shrink and crease unnecessarily.

  • Partially roll up the handwraps and place them in a laundry bag or bra bag.
  • Wash the handwraps in the washing machine at a maximum of 30°C or hand-wash them.
  • Let the handwraps air-dry, preferably hung up at full length.
  • Do not put the handwraps in the dryer.

Extra tips:

  • Wash the handwraps regularly (after every training session) to keep them hygienically clean and fresh.
  • You can use a mild detergent if desired, but rinse the handwraps thoroughly to prevent soap residue.
  • Let the handwraps dry completely after washing before using them again.

Why do you use handwraps?

When boxing and kickboxing, training on the punching bag or with kicking and punching shields, your hands and wrists endure a lot.

Inner gloves and handwraps provide extra protection for your hands, knuckles, and wrists.

As an added benefit, they help extend the lifespan of your boxing gloves by absorbing sweat.

You can find much more information about this in the handwraps collection.

How do I put on handwraps?

There are many different ways and variations to put on short and long handwraps. As you use them more often, you’ll develop your own preference: some people wrap more around the wrists, while others wrap a little more around the knuckles of their fists.

Why are boxing wraps essential for every training session?

Boxing wraps have two essential functions: they make your fist compact so you can punch harder and prevent injuries, and they absorb sweat so it does not seep into your boxing gloves. A good handwrap protects the metacarpal bones, knuckles, and wrist with every punch—from light bag training to intense sparren.
