All about mouthguards, F2W help guide

Are you unsure which mouthguard suits you best? Below we answer the most frequently asked questions about mouth protection for combat sports.

Our mouthguards provide the optimal protection you need during your training and competitions.

A good mouthguard for martial arts – what to look for

There are many different types of mouthguards available, including virtually every color imaginable. But with a mouthguard, it is especially important that it feels comfortable and molds well to your teeth. There is no single best brand—it depends on the sport you practice and your personal preference.

If we had to choose, we'd go with Shock Doctor, Opro and SafeJawz.

Features of a good mouthguard:

  • Good protection for teeth and jaws
  • Comfortable and precise fit
  • Easy to mold yourself
  • Free from harmful substances and BPA-free
  • Easy to breathe while wearing the mouthguard

What is the difference between a regular mouthguard and a double mouthguard?

A standard mouthguard protects only your upper teeth and is most commonly used in boxing, kickboxing, and thai boxing. It is lightweight, allows you to breathe easily, and is suitable for both training and competition. Almost all our customers buy a single mouthguard (upper teeth only).

A double mouthguard protects both your upper and lower teeth and provides more jaw protection—ideal for full-contact or if truly maximum protection comes before everything else. Note: breathing with a double mouthguard is much more difficult.

The material of a martial arts mouthguard

Most mouthguards are made from thermoplastic material that you mold yourself in hot water (60–80°C). Once molded, the mouthguard fits your teeth perfectly.

Some brands use more advanced technologies:

  • Shock Doctor uses a Gel Fit liner for extra comfort and integrated ventilation openings
  • SafeJawz features Remodel Tech, allowing you to remold the mouthguard up to 3 times

Sport with braces – choosing the right mouthguard

With braces, you need a special braces mouthguard — a standard thermoplastic mouthguard won't fit and could damage your braces.

Braces mouthguards are often made of 100% medical-grade silicone or feature a Fluid-Fit system that adapts instantly.

Good options include:

  • Shock Doctor Braces — Insta-Fit silicone, latex- and BPA-free
  • SafeJawz Ortho — 2-layer, Fluid-Fit, also available in Dracula and Marvel Venom designs
  • Opro Gold Braces — antimicrobial, double-layer

Available in both junior and adult sizes.

The mouthguard brands at Fight2Win

Fight2Win sells the best brands in mouth protection:

  • SafeJawz - Jaw Secure system, Remodel Tech, and a wide range including Marvel licenses (Spiderman, Venom, Deadpool, and more).
  • Shock Doctor - best-selling brand; the Gel Max is our bestseller.
  • Opro - official UFC line from Bronze to Platinum, with antimicrobial protection.
  • Bytomic - ideal entry-level model in many colors, also for children.

Mouthguards for children – junior sizes and recommendations

For children, we recommend a junior mouthguard — smaller in size and easier to mold to smaller teeth.

Good choices include:

  • Bytomic Basic — up to approximately 11 years old, available in many colors
  • Opro Bronze / Adidas Bronze Gen4 — junior size, entry-level model
  • SafeJawz Intro — junior and adult, Remodel Tech (can be remolded 3 times)
  • Shock Doctor EZ Guard — latex- and BPA-free, junior size

Maintaining your mouthguard

Rinse your mouthguard with cold water after each use and always store it in a protective case—never loose in your sports bag. Never use hot water for cleaning, as it will deform the fit.

We sell antimicrobial protective cases from:

  • Opro V2 — black, compact
  • Shock Doctor — orange, with carabiner
  • SafeJawz Premium — unbreakable silicone, with carabiner

For extra hygiene, we recommend the SafeJawz disinfectant spray: 50 ml, mint scent, enough for ~150 uses.

Molding your mouthguard to fit – the general method

Most mouthguards are thermoplastic and can be molded at home. Note: the exact temperature and softening time varies by brand and model— always read the included instructions or the brand's product page before you begin.

The general method:

  1. Heat water to the temperature specified for your mouthguard (usually 60–80°C, do not boil)
  2. Submerge the mouthguard for the specified time (usually 20–30 seconds)
  3. Remove it and let it cool for 2–3 seconds
  4. Press it firmly onto your teeth and gently suck
  5. Rinse it in cold water to set the shape

SafeJawz with Remodel Tech can be remolded up to 3 times if the fit isn't right.

Molding a mouthguard is entirely at your own risk and responsibility.

Frequently asked questions — Mouthguards

What is Brace Harbour?

The SafeJawz mouthguards from the Ortho range provide full protection for the upper braces thanks to the patented Brace Harbour™.

This works together with the Lowerblok™, protecting the lips and inside of the cheeks from the lower braces (if the wearer has them).

Brace Harbour™ creates space for the upper braces, reduces discomfort, and improves the mouthguard’s “grip”. The “Brace Harbour” on the upper side fits snugly around your brackets, keeping it securely in place.

Is this mouthguard suitable for people with braces?

Yes.

This mouthguard was specially developed for people who wear braces.

Does Shock Doctor also offer mouthguards suitable for people with braces?

Yes.

Shock Doctor has a very good reputation for providing mouth protection for people with braces. However, you cannot use a "regular" mouthguard for this purpose.

Shock Doctor has special braces mouthguards that are suitable for use with braces. The materials in these mouthguards are medical-grade, which also explains the often somewhat higher price of these special Shock Doctor braces mouthguards.

The packaging of these mouthguards usually specifically says "braces".

Why should I use a double mouthguard?

More protection & safety.

A double mouthguard protects both the upper and lower teeth. It is especially suitable for people who need extra protection or for high-contact sports.

The only (and major) disadvantage of a double mouthguard is that breathing is much more difficult. This is why you rarely see professional fighters wearing a double mouthguard during competitions.

What size mouthguard do I need?

There are usually 2 sizes for mouthguards:

  • youth (up to around 11 years old)
  • adults (12 years and older)

Some brands state up to 10 years old on the packaging, while other brands state 11 or 12 years old. There is no hard dividing line, either.

Sometimes mouthguards are "one-size". This is usually the case with mouthguards for braces, in which case the mouthguard is suitable for all ages.

What can I do to keep my Shock Doctor mouthguard hygienically clean and fresh?

It’s best to clean your mouthguard after every use. At a minimum, rinse the shock Doctor mouthguard under running water.

You do this to remove bacteria that can grow and multiply in your mouthguard.

The best step-by-step plan for keeping your mouthguard clean:

1. Rinse:
Rinse your mouthguard under lukewarm water immediately after use to remove food particles and saliva.

2. Clean:
Use a soft toothbrush and a special mouthguard cleaner to clean the mouthguard.

3. Rinse thoroughly:
After cleaning, rinse the mouthguard thoroughly under running water to remove all residue.

4. Dry:
Allow the mouthguard to air-dry completely. It’s best to do this in a clean, ventilated anti-microbial Protective case specially designed for this purpose.

5. Store:
Store the dry mouthguard in the specially designated anti-microbial Protective case, so it stays clean and hygienically fresh until the next training session.
