Bag gloves or regular boxing gloves on the punching bag. What’s the difference?
Most athletes buy one pair of boxing gloves for all their training—understandably, but it’s not the best choice if you regularly train on the punching bag.
Benefits of bag gloves on the punching bag:
Flatter striking surface - less strain on the wrists with proper technique
Smaller and lighter - you can punch faster and more accurately
Your sparring gloves last longer - the soft padding in sparring gloves isn’t designed for intensive punching bag work
Bag gloves last longer on the punching bag - the denser padding is specifically designed for this
When regular boxing gloves are better: For beginners who don’t train very often yet and don’t punch hard, regular boxing gloves are perfectly fine—and sometimes even better. They protect the entire hand, always have thumb protection, and provide more wrist support. Poor technique is punished less severely.
When bag gloves are the better choice: Do you train regularly or do full workouts on the punching bag? Then separate bag gloves are the wiser choice—for your hands and for the lifespan of your sparring gloves.

There are two fundamentally different types of bag gloves:
1. Classic bag gloves (open or loose thumb):Fairtex Open Thumb (100% leather, 511 g), King Pro Boxing KPB BG (100% leather, 430 g), Booster BBG (synthetic leather, 318 g). Compact, lightweight, traditional Thai construction. The thumb is positioned differently than on regular boxing gloves—you need to pay close attention to your punching technique. A favorite among kickboxers and Muay Thai fighters for pad and heavy bag work. Winning SB-3000 - handcrafted in Japan, the ultra-premium classic model.
2. Modern bag gloves (closed/protected thumb): The entire Rival range (RB5, RB50, RB10, RB11, RB100, RFX-Guerrero). Rival deliberately uses a thumb position comparable to regular boxing gloves—the thumb sits in a pre-shaped, natural fist position. The RB10 is the only bag glove in the collection that also has a genuine thumb protector stitched onto the glove.
Conclusion: classic models are lighter and provide more feedback—ideal for technique training. Modern Rival models offer more protection and support—ideal for intensive heavy bag training.

Bag gloves are not offered in oz but in S/M/L/XL—the size determines the fit around your hand, not the weight of the glove.
General guideline:
SSmall hands, lighter athletes (also available for RB5 and RB50)
MAverage hand size, the most commonly chosen size
LLarger hands, heavier athletes
XLLarge hands, available for RB5, RB50, RB11 and RB100
Exception: the Rival RFX-Guerrero models are available in 8 oz and 10 oz (traditional oz sizing). The Winning SB-3000 is one-size.
Please note for Fairtex: the sizing is typically Thai—rather on the small than the large side. Not sure? Choose one size larger, especially if you use handwraps.
Always use handwraps - including with bag gloves. Handwraps reinforce your hands and wrists and protect the inside of the glove.

Bag gloves are used intensively and absorb a lot of sweat—proper care is essential with frequent use.
After every training session:
Let the gloves air-dry in a ventilated place—never put them directly into a bag
Use an antibacterial spray to prevent bacterial growth
Use an deodorizer to help the gloves dry faster from the inside
100% leather (RB5, RB50, RFX-Guerrero, Fairtex, King Pro Boxing, Winning):
Wipe with a damp cloth after use
Treat periodically with leather grease to keep the leather supple—without care, cracks may develop on the surface with intensive use
Do not dry in direct sunlight
Microfiber (RB10, RB11, RB100):
Wipe with a damp cloth; no leather grease needed
The mesh panels on the palm side (RB10, RB11) provide better ventilation and drying—still use a deodorizer for optimal hygiene

Can I use bag gloves for sparring or partner training?
No.
Bag gloves should never be used for sparring or hitting anyone.
They are specifically designed for use with a punching bag and punching mitts (boxing mitts). The layered foam padding used in these bag gloves is hard, compact, and high-density, and is NOT intended for sparring.
For sparring, you need boxing gloves with more padding to protect both yourself and your training partner.

Bag gloves, which are used for training on a punching bag or pads, are usually much lighter than sparring gloves.
They are usually between 6 oz and 12 oz (170 to 340 grams).
Unlike regular boxing gloves, bag gloves are usually offered in standard sizes such as S, M, L, and XL rather than ounces, because they are designed to fit the boxer’s hand properly.
For comparison, sparring gloves are usually between 12 oz and 18 oz (340 and 520 grams), with much more padding for protection during training with a partner.
What is the difference between bag gloves and boxing gloves?
Bag gloves and Boxing gloves are both used during (kick)boxing training, but they serve different purposes and have different features.
Bag gloves are specifically designed for punching bag and pad training. They have less padding and often less wrist support. This provides more feedback and allows for faster combinations.
Boxing gloves, on the other hand, are used for sparring and potentially competitions, with an emphasis on protection and safety through thicker padding and greater wrist support.
Bag glove features:
Purpose: specifically designed for punching bags and pad training, to promote speed and precision.
Padding: less padding compared with Boxing gloves, providing more feedback on impact. The materials have a much higher density to withstand repeated impact.
Wrist support: less wrist support, to promote proper punching technique. However, this is not always the case; many Rival bag gloves have excellent wrist support (Wrist-Lock 2).
Fit: a smaller, tighter fit for better wrist stabilization.
Weight: lighter, for faster punches and combinations. Usually 8 oz or 10 oz.
Design: usually features an unattached thumb and sometimes no hook-and-loop closure or laces for quick putting on and removal.
Most of our customers actually don’t want to purchase more than 1 pair of boxing gloves, although that is usually the best choice. choice If you regularly train on a punching bag (or with hand pads), it is definitely wiser to purchase separate bag gloves for this purpose. As a result, both pairs will also last much longer.

The Wrist Lock 2 is attached via a loop on both the thumb side and the other side of the glove, ensuring that both sides of a glove, from the thumb to the cuff, are pressed evenly when fastening the strap. This is similar to tape applied over the cuff of a professional competition glove.
