Helio Gracie

Helio Gracie (1913–2009) is the co-founder of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and the architect of its defining philosophy. A frail child who could not perform the more athletic judo techniques taught by his brother Carlos, Helio adapted them to rely on leverage, timing, and body mechanics rather than strength—creating a system specifically designed for a smaller, weaker person to defeat a larger opponent on the ground. He proved his system in legendary vale-tudo fights, including a 3-hour, 45-minute contest with Japanese judoka Masahiko Kimura in 1951. His sons Rorion, Rickson, Royler, Royce, and others brought BJJ to the world. Helio is the spiritual father of modern BJJ.
