Taekwon-do belts measuring 210 cm are recommended for adult men and women. Belts measuring 170 cm or 190 cm are suitable for shorter women and juniors.

According to the ITF regulations and General Choi Hong Hi's Encyclopedia of Taekwon-do, the belt should be wrapped once around the waist. The belt is available in 170 cm (children), 190 cm (juniors and women) and 210 cm (men).

The ITF colored belts range from white (10th kup) to red (2nd kup)—each color represents a stage in the practitioner's development.
