3 tips for harder kickboxing kicks

We have 3 fundamental tips for harder kickboxing kicks! This way, you can show off your real kicking power in your next workout!

These three tips are for the roundhouse kick (or turning kick). This is one of the most effective weapons in kickboxing and Muay Thai. Many people don't perform the roundhouse kick correctly.

The tips below will help you perform the roundhouse kick better and therefore also kick harder.

Tip 1: Use your shins

Using your shins is a crucial part of almost every Muay Thai kick. Ideally, you'll learn which leg to use during your first few lessons. However, many beginners still struggle with shin kicks.

Beginners often kick with their instep, which isn't good. First of all, kicking with your foot/instep doesn't hurt nearly as much. A full shin against your thighs, ribs, and/or head hurts much more than an instep.

In addition, kicks with the instep are more dangerous. Your feet are full of small bones. These bones can break very easily if your opponent blocks your kick with their shin. This is why kicking with your shins is so important.

A helpful tip for kicking with your shins is to step further inward before you kick. This brings you closer to your opponent and automatically makes you kick with your shins.

Tip 2: Rotate your hips

Many people new to kickboxing/Thai boxing often make this mistake: they don't turn their hips while kicking. This prevents you from hitting your opponent effectively, because if you don't turn your hips, you'll just kick straight up.

A true Muay Thai roundhouse kick, as they say, should be thought of as a baseball bat. When you use a baseball bat, you pull it back and then swing it all the way through.

This is exactly how you should pedal if you want to get maximum power from your pedaling.

Tip 3: Turn your foot in

This tip ties in with tip number two. What you often see with beginning kickboxers is that they want to rotate their hips but can't quite do it.

Often this is because their foot is pointing straight towards their opponent, which prevents you from rotating your hips enough.

With these 3 tips for harder kickboxing kicks, I hope you'll improve your kicks. Try incorporating these three tips into your kicks, and you'll see how much harder they become. Also, use shin guards that fit your body. Visit our showroom in Capelle aan den IJssel for optimal advice.
