We have 3 fundamental tips for harder kickboxing kicks! This way, you can show in your next training how hard you can really kick!
The 3 tips are for the roundhouse kick (or turning kick). This is one of the most effective weapons in kickboxing and thai boxing. Many people do not perform the roundhouse kick correctly.
With the tips below, you can execute the roundhouse kick better and therefore kick harder.
Tip 1: use your shin guards
Using your shin guards is an important part of almost every muay thai kick. Ideally, you learn during the first lessons which part of your leg you should use to kick. Yet many beginners struggle to kick with their shin guards.
Often beginners kick with their instep, which is not good. First of all, kicks with your foot/instep hurt much less. A full shin against your thighs, ribs, and/or head hurts much more than an instep.
Additionally, kicking with the instep is more dangerous for you. Your feet contain many small bones. These bones can easily break if your opponent blocks your kick with their shin guards. This is why kicking with your shin guards is very important.
A handy tip to kick with your shin guards is to step further inward before kicking. This brings you closer to your opponent and you will automatically kick with your shin guards.
Tip 2: rotate your hips
Many people who are just starting with kickboxing/thai boxing often make this mistake. They do not rotate their hips during the kick. Because of this, you cannot hit your opponent properly, as without rotating your hips you just kick straight up.
A true muay thai roundhouse kick, as they call it, should be seen like a baseball bat. When you use a baseball bat, you pull it back and then swing it all the way through.
That’s exactly how you should kick if you want to get maximum power from your kicks.
Tip 3: turn your foot in
This tip connects to tip two. What you often see with beginner kickboxers is that they want to rotate their hips but cannot do it far enough.
Often this is because their foot points straight at their opponent, which prevents you from rotating your hips sufficiently.
