Thai boxing

Thai boxing, also known as Muay Thai, is a martial art that combines standing fighting techniques with clinch techniques and throws.

The Thai martial art is hugely popular worldwide and is known as the art of 8 limbs. This nickname is derived from the techniques performed with the fists, elbows, knees and shins.

During the 20th and 21st centuries, Thai boxing gained tremendous international prominence through Westerners who began competing in the international kickboxing circuit and various MMA organizations.

Muay Thai originally developed from the traditional Muay Boran. A practitioner of this brutal and tough sport is called a Nak Muay.

Westerners who practice the sport in Thailand are sometimes called Nak Muay Farang in Thailand: “foreign boxer”.

The Netherlands is known for its top fighters in kickboxing and Muay Thai. As a result, the sport can now be practiced in many places and gyms throughout the Netherlands—and therefore in your local area as well.

In the Netherlands, traditional Thai boxing is distinguished from kickboxing mainly by the limited use of the characteristic Thai techniques, such as elbow techniques and knee techniques from the clinch.

These traditional techniques were deliberately omitted by organizations such as K-1 and Glory to increase the pace of matches for the viewing audience and make them more appealing.
