Be honest: how well do you take care of your shoes and other clothing or sports equipment? We all put our stuff in the washing machine, but unfortunately most people don’t maintain their gear very well.
And that’s a shame! It’s a result of our throwaway society and being used to (cheap) replaceable products. However, if you have nice things (a phone, car, watch, or really nice boxing gloves), they deserve to be well protected and cared for.
We have some very nice, good, and also expensive boxing gloves and other leather training equipment in our range, and you can enjoy them even longer if you take good care of them after purchase and use!
So why should you use leather grease?
Very simple: if you’re going to lie in the sun, you probably use sunscreen. And maybe you always use luxury skin cream. Leather grease does the same for your gloves (or headgear) as that cream does for your own skin: it cares for your beautiful gloves.
- Prevents drying out: leather grease keeps leather supple and prevents it from drying out, becoming stiff, and cracking.
- Water-repellent: leather grease makes your leather boxing gloves water-repellent, making them better protected against external influences. Even the sweat from your opponents and training partners negatively affects your boxing gloves, and with leather grease you simply protect your gloves a bit better.
- In short: by properly maintaining the leather, it stays in better condition and your boxing gloves and other equipment last much longer.
To use leather grease on, for example, your boxing gloves, first clean them well with a clean, dry cloth. Then apply a small amount of leather grease with a soft cloth or a soft sponge.
Rub it in and let it absorb well (a few minutes to half an hour). Then rub off the excess grease again with a clean cloth. This gives you a supple and water-repellent result that protects the leather much better against drying out and cracking.
Summary of the greasing process:
- Clean the item to be greased
- Apply leather grease or lotion with a clean, dry soft cloth
- Let it absorb
- Rub off and wipe away residues with a clean, dry soft cloth
Here are a few important, handy tips from us:
If you use leather grease, don’t apply it on the most prominent spot on your aunt’s 100-year-old couch. The same goes for your boxing gloves: try it first on a small, inconspicuous spot to see if it affects the color.
You train regularly. So take care of your gear regularly too. Follow the steps above about once a month to keep your boxing gloves and gear in optimal condition.
Even if you’re not training for a while due to vacation, injury, or other circumstances, it’s wise to care for your boxing gloves occasionally with leather grease. Compare it to a parked car, whose rubber parts will also dry out over time.
Never place your leather boxing gloves, shin guards, or headgear near a heater or radiator. This severely damages the leather by drying it out. The same applies to placing them in direct, hot sunlight.
Enjoy your training! Keep punching!
