Bag gloves vs. boxing gloves – what’s the difference, and when do you use each?

Regular boxing gloves have thick, soft padding designed for sparring – they protect both parties during contact. Bag gloves have more compact, denser padding for contact with the hard punching bag – lighter, better feel for the punch, and more comfortable during extended bag training.

The open thumb of the Booster BBG provides better grip for uppercuts and hooks and allows for more ventilation. Bag gloves are not suitable for sparring - always use regular boxing gloves with sufficient padding for this.

Why should I use bag gloves?

Most of our customers actually don't want to purchase more than 1 pair of boxing gloves, although that is usually the best choice. choice If you regularly train on a punching bag (or with hand pads), it really is wiser to purchase separate bag gloves for this purpose. As a result, both pairs will also last much longer.

Benefits of bag gloves on the punching bag:

  • Bag gloves have a flatter striking surface and flatter padding, which means less impact is transferred to the wrists when using proper technique.
  • Bag gloves are smaller and lighter. This allows you to punch much faster and more precisely.
  • Your sparring boxing gloves will last much longer because the padding isn't being beaten against the punching bag.
  • Bag gloves usually last much longer on a punching bag.

What is the difference between bag gloves and boxing gloves?

Bag gloves and boxing gloves are both used during (kick)boxing training, but they serve different purposes and have different features.

Bag gloves are specially designed for punching bag and pad training. They have less padding and often less wrist support. This provides more feedback and allows for faster combinations.

Boxing gloves, on the other hand, are used for sparring and potentially competitions, with an emphasis on protection and safety through thicker padding and more wrist support.

Bag glove features:

  • Purpose: specially designed for punching bags and pad training, promoting speed and precision.
  • Padding: less padding compared with boxing gloves, providing more feedback on impact. The materials have a much higher density to withstand repeated impact.
  • Wrist support: less wrist support, promoting proper punching technique. However, this is not always the case; many Rival bag gloves have excellent wrist support (Wrist-Lock 2).
  • Fit: a smaller, tighter fit for better wrist stabilization.
  • Weight: lighter, for faster punches and combinations. Usually 8 oz or 10 oz.
  • Design: usually features a separate thumb and sometimes no hook-and-loop closure or laces for quick putting on and taking off.
How heavy are bag gloves?

Bag gloves, which are used for training on a punching bag or pads, are usually much lighter than sparring gloves.

They are generally somewhere between 6 oz and 12 oz (170 to 340 grams).

Unlike regular boxing gloves, bag gloves are usually offered in standard sizes such as S, M, L, and XL rather than ounces, because they are designed to fit the boxer’s hand properly.

For comparison: Sparring gloves are usually between 12 oz and 18 oz (340 and 520 grams), with much more padding for protection during training with a partner.

Should I condition or grease the leather?

Yes.

Just like our own skin, you should regularly care for leather products to prevent them from drying out and the like.

It is best to lightly apply leather grease to your leather product, such as boxing gloves, from time to time.
