Tips for Fairtex MMA Gloves

The 4 oz is intended for competitions and light sparring, while the 7 oz is for training and heavier sparring; choose your weight based on your type of training.

Always wear handwraps or gel-wraps under the gloves for extra protection for your knuckles and wrists.

The 100% cowhide leather (handmade in Thailand) requires maintenance. Wipe the gloves with a damp cloth after every training session and let them air out. Occasionally use leather grease or conditioner to keep the leather supple; we have leather grease Rapide.

Frequently Asked Questions — MMA gloves Fairtex Sparring 7 oz

What is the difference between 4 oz and 7 oz MMA gloves?

The difference lies in the weight (oz) of the MMA-gloves. A 4 oz glove is, as expected, lighter than a 7 oz glove.

The 7 oz gloves are more suitable (i.e., safer) for regular training. This is due to the thicker padding on the striking surface.

The 4 oz MMA-gloves, on the other hand, are often regarded as competition gloves.

Naturally, both 4 oz and 7 oz can also be used as "training" MMA-gloves.

What size MMA gloves do I need?

In addition to the difference in weight (4 oz or 7 oz), MMA gloves are also available in sizes S through XL.

These are almost always adult sizes, so most women will fit an S or M, and most men—depending on the size of their hands—an M, L, or XL.

Depending on your age and the circumference of your hands, you will need to choose which size suits your hands best. For personal advice, it is best to visit our store so you can try on the gloves.

Every MMA glove brand and model on our website has a unique size chart. Here, we provide the best possible guideline for what we believe is the best choice for you for that specific model.

Can I use MMA gloves on a punching bag?

Yes.

Of course, the open-finger gloves are also particularly suitable for intensive heavy-bag training.

Thanks to the thick padding, your hands are well protected. The separate fingers give you flexibility, allowing you to easily interrupt your training to do push-ups or have a drink, for example.

Collections

Are MMA gloves also used in Krav Maga?

Yes.

MMA gloves are ideal for Krav Maga.

This is because they provide protection with as little restriction as possible. You can also easily grab and grapple with them. This makes them well suited for the most realistic training possible.

Collections

Do you use handwraps with MMA gloves?

Yes.

It is common to wear boxing handwraps under MMA gloves.

Handwraps provide crucial support and protection for the hands and wrists, which are prone to injuries during training and fights. Boxing wraps help stabilize the wrists and knuckles, prevent hyperextension, and absorb impacts.

Reasons to use handwraps for MMA:

  • Support and stability: handwraps connect the small metacarpal bones and the bones in the hand and wrist. This creates a more stable structure that can withstand the force of punches.
  • Injury prevention: they help prevent common MMA injuries, such as broken metacarpal bones, sprained or broken wrists, and knuckle injuries.
  • Improved fit: handwraps improve the fit inside your gloves. They provide a more compact, secure, and snug feel.
  • Sweat absorption: handwraps absorb sweat, which can help prevent the gloves from becoming slippery and uncomfortable while also keeping your hands drier.
  • Hygiene: by absorbing sweat, handwraps help prevent the growth of bacteria inside your gloves.

Why do fighters wear gloves in the UFC?

MMA gloves are primarily worn in the UFC for safety of fighters, particularly to protect their hands from injuries during punches.

Although they allow powerful punches, the gloves also help prevent cuts, leading to more exciting and longer fights. This also makes it more appealing to the audience and has helped make MMA so popular.

In addition, the gloves help with grappling by allowing fighters to maintain a better grip.

During the first editions of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (before 1997) and other MMA tournaments, gloves were not yet used. This often resulted in (too) short fights, full of blood but not very interesting for the audience.

Collections

When were MMA gloves introduced?

MMA gloves, as we know them today, were introduced at UFC 14 1997.

They had already been used by other MMA organizations such as Pride FC.

The UFC mandated the use of 4 to 6 oz (113–170 grams) gloves to improve fighter safety and help the sport transition to stricter regulations and standardization.

Although some fighters had already worn gloves, they only became mandatory at UFC 14.

Collections

What are hybrid MMA gloves?

Hybrid MMA gloves are exactly what they sound like: a “hybrid” between regular larger boxing gloves and smaller, compact MMA gloves.

They are relatively large for MMA gloves because they have thicker padding and therefore offer more protection than (competition) MMA gloves.

During training at clubs and gyms, hybrid gloves (or at least heavier MMA gloves) are mainly used for safety.

Hybrid MMA gloves are also very suitable for Krav Maga, bag training, or other forms of self-defense. You can punch effectively with them while still being able to grapple.
