Boxing, also known as Western boxing, is an incredibly popular combat sport in which two people fight each other using only their fists.
Equipment used
In general, unless it is a bare-knuckle match, participants wear protective gloves, also known as boxing gloves. They usually also wear handwraps (wraps, handwraps), a mouthguard, groinguard and, depending on the rules, headgear.
Generally, the term refers to Western boxing, but boxing techniques are used in various combat sports around the world. They are sometimes supplemented with striking, punching and kicking techniques using the legs, knees and elbows. Examples include kickboxing, thai boxing, sanda, savate and many other exotic martial arts.
Introduction of the rules
One of the most significant moments in the history of modern boxing was the introduction of the "Marquess of Queensberry Rules" in 1867. This gave boxing enormous momentum, and today it is even Olympic and by far the most watched combat sport in the world.
Famous boxers
Of course, everyone has heard of the most famous boxers in history: Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Roberto Duran, Bep van Klaveren (we cannot leave out our Dutch pride here) and, of course, one of the greatest celebrities ever: Cassius Clay, also known as Muhammad Ali!
