3. Visibility - a very important factor. There is always a trade-off between visibility and protection. Visibility is an active form of protection: the goal is still to avoid getting hit in the first place.
4. Ease of use - how easy is it to adjust the headgear to your size? And how easy is it to put on and take off with regular use?
5. Build quality - the materials used, finish, and durability. We also look at details such as laces and hook-and-loop fasteners.

Once adjusted with the laces, the RHG10 is easy to put on and take off. The chin strap provides additional security. It requires slightly more adjustment than the Hayabusa T3, but the superior fit and protection more than make up for it.

2. Rival HG30

The Rival HG30 is one of our favorite pieces of headgear and an F2W Choice. The traditional Mexican design is combined with Rival's top-quality leather and a unique innovation: two diagonal hook-and-loop straps at the back of the neck that allow the headgear to follow the contours of the back of the head precisely. A detail that makes a big difference in stability and protection.

The fit of the HG30 is excellent. The cheekbone protection is good, and the Crush Zone core effectively absorbs impacts. Without a chin guard, the chin is naturally less protected. For serious sparrers who also want to protect their chin: choose the standard T3 or the Rival HG30.

4. Hayabusa T3

The Hayabusa T3 is the version with a chin guard—offering more protection than the T3 Boxing, but with slightly more bulk. Fit - Score: 7/10

The T-Cross strap system provides a good fit. With the chin guard, the T3 is slightly bulkier than the T3 Boxing. The T3 may shift slightly under very hard strikes—an inherent trade-off of its lightweight design.

Protection - Score: 7/10

The chin guard provides better overall protection than the T3 Boxing. The mesh panels over the ears are integrated into the design. The lightweight construction provides slightly less cushioning than the Rival models—but more than sufficient for beginners and advanced athletes.

Visibility - Score: 6/10

The chin guard slightly limits visibility compared with the T3 Boxing. Sufficient for training, but clearly less open than the T3 Boxing, RHG10, or HG30.

Ease of Use - Score: 10/10

Build Quality - Score: 7/10

Important note: the HGL3 fits compactly – it runs on the smaller side. When in doubt, choose one size larger. Available in S, M, and L.

Fit – Score: 6/10

The fit is adequate to good when the HGL3 fits properly. The lacing at the top, combined with the wide hook-and-loop closure at the back, provides good adjustability. On some head shapes, the cheekbones fit well but the chin does not, or vice versa. The HGL3 may shift slightly when struck.

Protection – Score: 7/10

The protection is more than adequate for beginners and advanced athletes. The padding is firm enough and provides good shock absorption. The chin, cheekbones, and ears are well protected.

Visibility – Score: 7/10

Despite the substantial cheekbone protection, it offers sufficient visibility with a wide field of view. The HGL3 performs consistently in this area. When the laces and fit are properly adjusted, visibility is excellent.

Ease of Use – Score: 8/10

Once adjusted with the laces, the HGL3 is easy to put on and take off using the wide hook-and-loop closure. The wide hook-and-loop strap is easy to grip and fasten.

Build Quality – Score: 7/10

How do you measure your head circumference?

Use a tape measure to measure the circumference of your head at the widest point—just above the eyebrows at the front and just above the ears on the sides. Keep the tape measure horizontal. Unsure between two sizes? Choose the larger size.
