3 tips for harder kickboxing kicks

We have 3 fundamental tips for harder kickboxing kicks! This way you can show how hard you can really pedal during the next training session! The 3 tips are for the roundhouse kick (or turning kick). This is one of the most effective weapons in kickboxing and Thai boxing. There are many people who do not do the roundhouse kick properly. With the tips below you can perform the roundhouse kick better and therefore kick harder.

Tip 1: use your shins

Using your shins is an important part of almost every Muay Thai kick. If all goes well, you will learn during the first lessons which part of your leg you should kick with. But many beginners still have a lot of difficulty kicking with their shins. Beginners often kick with their instep, this is not good. First of all, kicking with your foot/instep doesn't hurt half as much. A full shin against your thighs, ribs and/or head hurts much more than an instep. In addition, kicking with the instep is more dangerous for you. There are all kinds of small bones in your feet. These bones can break very easily if your opponent blocks your kick with his shin. This is why kicking with your shins is very important. A helpful tip for kicking with your shins is to step further in before you kick. This makes you closer to your opponent and you automatically kick with your shins.

Tip 2: rotate your hips

Many people who are just starting out with kick/Thai boxing often make this mistake. They do not rotate their hips during the kick. This prevents you from hitting your opponent properly, because if you don't turn your hips, you just kick straight up. A real muay thai roundhouse kick as they call it should be thought of as a baseball bat. If you use a baseball bat, you bring it back and then you swing it all the way through. This is exactly how you should pedal if you want to get maximum power from your pedaling.

Tip 3: turn your foot in

This tip ties in with tip two. What you often see with novice kickboxers is that they want to turn their hips in, but cannot do so far enough. This is often because their foot is pointing straight at their opponent, which prevents you from turning your hips in enough. Below you can see an example of how your feet should be positioned: As you can see here, the supporting leg is completely turned away from the opponent. This gives the hips room to rotate completely.

With these 3 Tips for harder kickboxing kicks, I hope you will make progress with your kicking. Try combining these three tips into your kicking and you will see how much harder your kicking will become. Also use shin guards that fit your body.
