Ask a child what Martial Arts is, and you often get answers like: “somersaults and kicks” or “becoming a ninja.” Ask a parent, and they’ll probably say: “discipline, respect, and burning off energy.” And that’s exactly the magic of Martial Arts for kids: it’s fun and educational at the same time.
Whether it’s Karate, Judo, Kickboxing, or Taekwon-Do – children don’t just learn techniques, but also teamwork, respecting boundaries, and building self-confidence. And the best part? They often don’t even realize they’re working hard on motor skills, fitness, and focus.
Martial arts popular with children
Judo
Judo is ideal for children because it focuses on balance and throwing, not punching or kicking. Kids learn how to fall without hurting themselves – something parents secretly appreciate too.
Karate
Karate is all about discipline and precision. Kids especially enjoy the Katas (set movements) because it almost feels like a dance full of cool moves.
Taekwon-Do
Lots of kicks, lots of spectacle. For children, this is often a hit because it looks cool and is very energetic.
Kickboxing
Increasingly popular with kids, especially because they have a lot of fun with punching shields. This gives children a safe and controlled outlet for their energy.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
BJJ is also growing among children. It’s a bit like “ground puzzling”: rolling, turning, and locking. Kids often experience it as a game but learn a lot of control in the process.
Why children benefit so much from martial arts
What makes Martial Arts unique for children is that it’s more than just a sport. It’s a mix of physical training, mental resilience, and social skills. In a world where children are often glued to their iPads, it’s refreshing to see them excel on the mat full of energy. Not just for the parents, but especially for themselves.
The great thing is that martial arts aren’t about winning or losing. It’s about learning to deal with yourself and others – and that might be even more important for children than for adults.
Martial Arts exercises for kids (at home)
At Fight2Win.nl, we have a lot of experience training children. For this list, we looked at what is often done in various martial arts and what really excites kids.
1. Falling and rolling games (Judo & BJJ)
Kids learn to fall and roll, but in game form. For example: “who can roll the coolest like a ninja?” This way they learn technique without it getting boring.
2. Knock down the tower! (Taekwon-Do & Karate)
Build a tower with cushions or boxes and let children take turns knocking it down with a kick or punch. Result: fun together and still learning technique.
3. Punching shield relay (Kickboxing)
Form pairs and place the children opposite each other with enough space for a short sprint. Both kids have a punching shield. One child sprints to the other, delivers a series of punches or kicks on the shield, and then runs back to their own spot.
4. Wrestling for the ball (BJJ & Judo)
Place a soft ball in the middle and let two children try to get it to their side using grappling techniques. Playful but also great for balance and control.
5. Shadow fighting (Karate & Kickboxing)
Let children perform movements as if fighting an imaginary opponent – but with a rule added: for example, “only in slow motion” or “pretend you’re floating in space.” That makes it funny and creative.
Teaching children Martial Arts
One tries a serious Judo roll, another can’t stop laughing while knocking down a tower, and before you know it, several kids are giggling and rolling around the room. It’s chaos and discipline at the same time – and that’s what makes martial arts so special for children. Because let’s be honest: it’s not about creating a future champion.
It’s about children learning to have respect, burning off their energy, and most of all having fun. And when they bounce out the door with red cheeks, a grin from ear to ear, and a punching shield under their arm, you know as a trainer you’re doing a great job.
