14 oz or 16 oz. The right weight for men’s boxing gloves.

Men generally choose heavier weights than women, depending on body weight and intended use:

Guideline based on body weight:

  • up to 65 kg - 12 oz (training) or 14 oz (sparren)
  • 65–80 kg - 14 oz (training and sparren) – the most commonly chosen size
  • 80–95 kg - 16 oz – the standard weight for men
  • over 95 kg - 16 oz or 18 oz

Use:

  • Bag work and pads - 12 oz or 14 oz is sufficient
  • Sparren - always at least 14 oz, preferably 16 oz for your partner’s safety
  • Heavy sparring / professional - 16 oz or 18 oz

Rule of thumb: almost all men train with 14 oz or 16 oz. A smaller, lighter person may choose 12 oz.

Krav Maga - hook-and-loop gloves are the standard. The XPRT Pro V3 and Enforcer V4 are widely used.

Professional boxing - Winning, Cleto Reyes (laces) and Rival RFX Guerrero (laces) are the standard at the professional level.

Invest in maintenance. This is how you keep men’s boxing gloves in top condition.

Men's boxing gloves are subjected to heavy use—proper care prevents odors, bacterial growth, and premature wear during intensive use.

After every training session:

  • Let the gloves air-dry in a ventilated place—never put them directly into a bag
  • Use an antibacterial spray (Sukkiri or FreshKO) to inhibit bacterial growth
  • Use an deodorizer to help the gloves dry faster from the inside

Synthetic leather (Enforcer V4, Conquest V9, King Pro Boxing, Rival RS60V):

  • Wipe with a damp cloth; do not submerge

Microfiber (Rival RS11V, RS100):

  • Wipe with a damp cloth; no leather grease needed

VYLAR®-2 (Hayabusa T3):

  • Wipe with a damp cloth; do not use leather grease on VYLAR®-2

100% leather (XPRT Pro V3, Top Gloves, Icon MX, Twins, Cleto Reyes, Hayabusa T3 LX, Winning, Di Nardo, Rival RFX):

  • Wipe with a damp cloth after use
  • Treat periodically with leather grease to keep the leather supple during intensive use
  • Do not dry in direct sunlight

Always: use handwraps or inner gloves - this protects the inside of the glove and keeps it more hygienic.

Frequently asked questions — Men's boxing gloves

What is the difference between bag gloves and boxing gloves?

Bag gloves are intended for punching bag and pad training. Sparring gloves are designed for training with a partner. Padding, hand space and closure vary by model; a bag glove does not necessarily offer less wrist support.

Do not use a bag glove for sparren just because its weight is similar to that of a sparring glove. Check the model's stated use. Separate bag and sparring gloves can help prevent your sparring pair from taking constant wear on the punching bag.

How do I use a care spray for boxing gloves?

Take your boxing gloves out of your bag after training and open them up wide. Spray the inside according to the dosage and spraying distance indicated on the can. Then let the gloves air-dry completely before storing them.

Use a spray designed for boxing gloves. The amount to use and any required contact time vary by product, so follow the instructions on the spray you use.

How does a "deodorizer" work?

A deodorizer helps absorb moisture and odors from inside your gloves. After airing out your gloves, place the deodorizer inside them and let it dry between training sessions too. Take your gloves out of your gym bag after every session. Alongside cleaning your gear, the deodorizer helps it dry and stay fresh.

Is there a difference between kickboxing gloves and boxing gloves?

Many boxing gloves can also be used for kickboxing. So the collection name alone does not determine whether a model is right for you. Focus on comparing the hand space, padding and wrist closure.

Boxing focuses on punching and keeping your guard up. In kickboxing and Muay Thai, blocking kicks and possibly clinching also come into play. Choose the design that feels comfortable for your training.

What are good boxing glove brands?

XPRT and Rival offer a broad foundation for boxing training. Hayabusa and Twins are also interesting choices for kickboxing and Muay Thai. Cleto Reyes and Winning each offer their own fit, finish and boxing tradition.

A brand is not just for beginners or advanced boxers. Compare the construction, room for your hands, padding and closure within your budget. The best choice suits your training and feels comfortable with your handwraps on.

How do I properly care for my boxing gloves?

Take your boxing gloves out of your bag after every training session and let them air-dry with the closures open. Wipe the outside with a slightly damp cloth and avoid direct heat.

Use clean, dry handwraps. A deodorizer or care product can be a helpful addition, but check that it is suitable for the material and finish. Don't apply cream or grease to every leather glove on a fixed schedule.

What is the difference between hook-and-loop and lace-up boxing gloves?

With hook-and-loop closures, you can usually put on and take off boxing gloves easily by yourself. Laces let you tighten the cuff over a longer area; you generally need help fastening them.

Laces don't automatically provide an anatomically perfect fit or better performance than every hook-and-loop glove. Compare the hand compartment, padding and cuff too, and choose the option that suits your training.
