A good mouthguard for martial arts – what to look for
There are many different types of mouthguards available, also in almost every imaginable color. But with a mouthguard, it is especially important that it fits comfortably and molds well to your teeth. There is no best brand - it depends on the sport you practice and your personal preference.
If we have to choose, we go for Shock Doctor, Opro and SafeJawz.

What is the difference between a regular and a double mouthguard?
A regular mouthguard only protects your upper teeth and is most commonly used in boxing, kickboxing, and thai boxing. It is light, allows you to breathe easily, and is suitable for both training and competition. Almost all our customers buy a single mouthguard (so only upper teeth).
A double mouthguard protects both upper and lower teeth and offers more jaw protection — ideal for full-contact or when maximum protection is truly maximum protection above all. Note: breathing with a double mouthguard is much more difficult.
Most mouthguards are made of thermoplastic material that you shape yourself in hot water (60–80°C). Once formed, the mouthguard fits your teeth perfectly.
Some brands use more advanced technologies:

SafeJawz has Remodel Tech that allows you to reshape the mouthguard up to 3 times
Sport with braces – choosing the right mouthguard
With braces, you need a special mouthguard for braces — a standard thermoplastic mouthguard does not fit and can damage your braces.
Mouthguards for braces are often made from 100% medical-grade silicone or have a Fluid-Fit system that adapts immediately.
Good options are:
Shock Doctor Braces — insta-fit silicone, latex- and BPA-free
SafeJawz Ortho — 2-layer, Fluid-Fit, also available in Dracula and Marvel Venom designs
Rinse your mouthguard with cold water after each use and always store it in a protective case — never loose in your sports bag. Never use hot water to clean it, as this will deform the fit.

Custom-Molding Your Mouthguard – The General Method
Most mouthguards are thermoplastic and you shape them yourself at home. Note: the exact temperature and soaking time vary by brand and model - always read the included instructions or the brand's product page before you start.
The general method:
Heat water to the temperature indicated on your mouthguard (usually 60–80°C, do not boil)
Submerge the mouthguard for the specified time (usually 20–30 seconds)
Remove it and let it cool for 2–3 seconds
Press firmly on your teeth and lightly suck in
Rinse in cold water to set the shape

The SafeJawz mouthguards from the Ortho series provide full protection of the upper brace thanks to the patented Brace Harbour™.
This works together with the Lowerblok™, which protects the lips and the inside of the cheeks from the lower brace (if the wearer has one).
Brace Harbour™ creates space for the upper brace, reduces discomfort, and improves the "fit" of the mouthguard. The 'Brace Harbour' at the top fits snugly around your brackets, ensuring it stays securely in place.
Is this mouthguard suitable for people with braces?
Yes.

Does Shock Doctor also have mouthguards suitable for braces wearers?
Yes.
Shock Doctor has a very good reputation in the field of mouthguards for people with braces. However, you cannot use a "regular" mouthguard for this.
Shock Doctor has special braces mouthguards that are suitable for use with braces. The materials of these mouthguards are of medical quality, which also explains the often somewhat higher price of these special Shock Doctor braces mouthguards.
The packaging of these mouthguards usually specifically indicates "braces".
A double mouthguard protects both the upper and lower teeth. They are especially suitable for people who need extra protection or for heavy contact sports.
The only (and major) disadvantage of a double mouthguard is that breathing becomes much more difficult. This is also the reason why you rarely see professional fighters wearing a double mouthguard during matches.
Some brands label the box as up to 10 years, others 11 years, and yet others 12 years. There is no strict dividing line.
Sometimes mouthguards are "one-size". This is usually the case with brace mouthguards, and in that case, the mouthguard is suitable for all ages.
What can I do to keep my Shock Doctor mouthguard hygienically clean and fresh?
The best thing to do is to clean your mouthguard after each use. You do this by at least rinsing the Shock Doctor mouthguard with running water.
You do this to remove bacteria that can grow and spread in your mouthguard.
The best step-by-step plan to keep your mouthguard clean:
1. Rinse:
Rinse your mouthguard immediately after use under lukewarm water to remove food particles and saliva.
2. Clean:
Use a soft toothbrush and a special mouthguard cleaner to clean the mouthguard.
3. Rinse thoroughly:
After cleaning, rinse the mouthguard well under running water to remove all residue.
4. Dry:
Let the mouthguard dry completely in the air. It is best to do this in a clean, ventilated anti-microbial Protective case that is specially made for this purpose.
5. Store:
Store the dry mouthguard in the specially designed anti-microbial Protective case, so it stays clean and hygienically fresh until the next training session.
