Children usually train with boxing gloves of 6 oz, 8 oz, or 10 oz. Very occasionally, for very small children, there are even 2 oz or 4 oz gloves.

Below are general guidelines. For each brand and model 

Choose by age:

• up to 3-4 years - 2 oz
• up to 4-5 years - 4 oz
• up to 6-8 years - 6 oz
• up to 9-11 years - 8 oz
• from 12 years - 10 oz

Choose by body weight

• up to 35 kg - 6 oz
• 35 – 45 kg - 8 oz
• 45 – 55 kg - 10 oz

The rule of thumb is: "the heavier the child in question, the heavier the glove to be used is desired". A heavier boxing glove generally has more padding and is therefore safer for the hands and the training partner. Trainers generally also prefer that you have heavier boxing gloves rather than lighter ones.

There is no specific age requirement here. The minimum age will be around 4 years old, but most gyms set the age at 7 or 8 years old. Be sure to check with the gym where you want to take the child.

Boxing gloves that fit well are definitely safe for children. Of course, there are a few important factors to consider: the length and width of the hand compartment and wrist closure. If these fit well without pinching, then it is safe to use.

Also, don’t buy kids boxing gloves that are too big, because too loose means sliding, and that is not good.

The child can definitely use the boxing gloves for multiple sports. Sports like kickboxing naturally use boxing gloves, but a completely different self-defense sport like Krav Maga also uses boxing gloves. This of course does not apply to all martial arts, so we also recommend checking with the gym where you want to send the child.
