How and why do you use leather grease for boxing gloves?

Be honest: how well do you take care of your shoes and other clothing or sports equipment? We all put our gear in the washing machine from time to time, but unfortunately, most people do not take very good care of their gear.

And that’s a shame! It is the result of our throwaway society and being used to using (cheap), replaceable products. However, if you own beautiful items (a phone, car, watch or a really nice pair of Boxing gloves), they deserve to be properly protected and cared for.

We have very nice, high-quality and sometimes expensive Boxing gloves and other leather training equipment in our range, and you can enjoy them for even longer if you take good care of them after purchasing and using them!

So why should you use Leather grease?

It’s very simple: when you lie in the sun, you probably use sunscreen. And perhaps you use luxury skin cream anyway. Leather grease does the same for your gloves (or headgear) as that cream does for your own skin: it takes care of your beautiful gloves.

  1. Prevents drying out: leather grease keeps leather supple and prevents it from drying out, becoming stiff and cracking.
  2. Repels moisture: leather grease makes your leather Boxing gloves water-repellent , making them better able to withstand external influences. The sweat of your opponents and training partners also has a (negative) effect on your Boxing gloves, and leather grease simply protects your gloves a little better.
  3. In short: by properly maintaining the leather, it stays in better condition, and your Boxing gloves and other equipment last much longer.

To use leather grease on, for example, your Boxing gloves, first clean them thoroughly with a clean, dry cloth. Then apply a small amount of leather grease with a soft cloth or soft sponge.

Rub it in and let it absorb properly for a while (a few minutes to half an hour). Then rub off the excess grease with another clean cloth. This gives you a supple and water-repellent result that protects the leather much better against drying out and cracking.

Leather greasing process summarized:

  • Clean the product you want to grease
  • Apply Leather grease or lotion with a clean, dry, soft cloth
  • Let it absorb
  • Rub off and remove any residue with a clean, dry, soft cloth

Here are a few more important and useful tips from us:

If you use leather grease, don’t apply it to the most prominent spot on your aunt’s 100-year-old sofa. The same applies to your Boxing gloves: try it first on a small, inconspicuous area to make sure it does not affect the color.

You train regularly, so take care of your gear regularly too. For example, follow the steps above once a month to keep your Boxing gloves and gear in optimal condition.

Even if you are not training for a while because of a holiday, injury or other circumstances, it is still wise to treat your Boxing gloves with leather grease from time to time. Compare it to a stationary car, whose rubber components will also dry out over time.

Never place your leather Boxing gloves, shin guards or headgear near a stove or heater. This severely damages the leather by drying it out. The same applies to placing them in direct, hot sunlight.

Enjoy your training! Keep punching!
