Cleto Reyes
The Cleto Reyes brand was originally created by Cleto Reyes Castro. Cleto was born in Mexico City in 1920 and grew up in a poor environment due to poor family circumstances. At the age of 12 he had to work to earn money.
The extraordinary story behind the world-famous brand Cleto Reyes
Cleto left school to work in a factory that sewed baseball gloves. It was here that he first came into contact with leather products and leather processing. Cleto was homeless at a young age. He slept in the same place where he worked. This workshop - which he also considered his home - brought out the creative talents of the young Reyes. After his workday, Cleto continued with the sewing machines, this to further develop his skills and arts . He could experiment to his heart's content in the workshop with leftover products.
At a later age – Cleto was around 16 – Reyes started to get interested in boxing and he started to train himself in it. At that time (and still today) many top boxers came from Mexico. In the sports arena nearby, Cleto followed his idols and top fighters from Mexico closely. Joe Condo, Rodolfo Casanova and Juan Zarita were the top fighters at that time and competitors of each other.
In 1938, Cleto entered a local boxing tournament. This was the first and last time that Cleto Reyes would enter the ring as a participant. Cleto received some serious blows during this tournament, but the spectators were very impressed by the young Mexican.
The origin of the Cleto Reyes boxing gloves
This particular event gave birth to what would later become the most famous boxing brand in the world. Cleto decided not to fight anymore after these tough matches. This despite the support he had received from the enthusiastic audience. But the professional in Cleto was further stimulated. He decided to renew and improve the boxing gloves he had worn.
For a number of years, Cleto was busy adjusting, testing and improving his own Cleto Reyes boxing gloves, before finally launching them on the market. And with success, because in 1945 , the first professional world championship was fought with Cleto Reyes boxing gloves.

The growth of the Mexican boxing brand
By the early 1950s, Cleto had gathered enough funds to set up and equip his own workshop. From here, he sold his now infamous boxing gloves to Mexican boxers . Their trainers helped Cleto spread the word about his brand and unique gloves by taking them with him and selling them on sports trips to the United States.
From 1965 onwards things took off as it was only then that it was officially distributed on the American market. Demand increased to such an extent that Cleto's son, Alberto Reyes, became a full-time employee in his father's business. Albert brought new fresh ideas and a better business sense to guide the brand into a new era.
Alberto Reyes visited and recruited new leather suppliers to develop and use lighter and more durable leather for the new models of Cleto Reyes boxing gloves. The product was also standardized to one uniform quality standard . He also officially registered Cleto Reyes as a brand name and trademark in 1975.
In 1999, Cleto Reyes sadly passed away, but his legacy lives on in the great boxing gloves that this family business still produces in Mexico. The company is still located in Mexico City . This special brand can be proud of the many boxing legends who use and used nothing but Cleto Reyes. Famous names such as Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Manny Pacquiao and Anthony Joshua are just a few of the icons who swear by this brand.

The Greatest of All Time: Mohammed Ali
Muhammad Ali , originally called Cassius Clay, obviously needs no introduction. The most famous – and for many also the best – boxer of all time is a true boxing icon and “larger than life'. In 1978 he gave the brand Cleto Reyes an extra special boost. Ali refused to use the boxing gloves of the sponsor during his top match “the Thrilla in Manilla”. He swore by his own trusted Cleto Reyes. However, he was ordered to tape over the logo of Cleto, so that the sponsor would not be discredited. Muhammad Ali – rebellious as he was – however had the tape removed by his trainer during the match, so that the famous logo of Cleto Reyes was clearly visible.
"I don't fight if it's not with Cleto Reyes gloves."
Ali also wore the Cleto Reyes boxing gloves during his very last match against Leon Spinks. He won and regained his heavyweight world boxing title!
