Frequently asked questions — Pads & mitts

Why are some punching mitts smaller than others?

Some punching mitts, particularly focus mitts or hook and jab pads, are smaller than regular punching mitts.

These pads are smaller because they are designed to improve a boxer’s speed, precision, and accuracy, rather than simply absorbing powerful punches.

The smaller size forces the boxer to focus on hitting a smaller target. This, in turn, helps refine their technique, precision, and reaction time.

Benefits of small punching mitts (micro pads):

  • Focus and accuracy: smaller punching mitts, such as micro focus mitts, require the boxer to be more accurate with their punches. This helps develop better accuracy and timing.
  • Speed training: the smaller surface of micro punching mitts allows for faster punch combinations, helping the boxer improve their overall speed and reaction time.
  • Less padding: compared with regular and larger punching mitts, micro focus mitts generally have less padding. This means that the trainer holding the pads has to expend less energy keeping them raised and can focus more on the actual training.
  • Specific exercises: smaller punching mitts are often used for specific exercises focused on speed and accuracy. Larger pads are better suited for developing power and absorbing heavy blows.
What is the difference between punching mitts, focus pads, Thai pads, and kicking shields?

Punching mitts, also known as  focus pads , are  compact pads that are held by a  trainer during a training session. The terms punching mitts and focus pads are used interchangeably. However, in our opinion, there are subtle differences between them, which is why our website distinguishes between them. Punching mitts are primarily intended for punches and punching techniques.

Thai pads, also known as  kickpads or  pao, are larger pads held by a trainer to practise both punches and kicks.

Punching shields are usually large, round cushions that the trainer or partner holds in front of the body. They are especially suitable for various punching techniques, including hooks, liver punches, and uppercuts.

Kicking shields are the really large cushions for punching and kicking. They are ideal for  beginners and children who, frankly, cannot yet aim very well. They are also very suitable for advanced practitioners, as these pads allow them to practise their technique at  full power .

What are the advantages and disadvantages of light or heavy punching mitts?

The weight of punching mitts is not necessarily a matter of build quality. Some very lightweight mitts (such as Rival Airpads, for example) are extremely durable.

Lightweight punching mitts are particularly comfortable for a trainer during extended use, but usually a little weight is desirable as well, and the heavier mitts are somewhat sturdier.

However, this is not necessarily the case and varies by brand and price range. We have weighed all the punching mitts in our range weighed and added this information to a size chart for the product in question!

What are micro pads?

Micro pads are extra-small punching mitts.

These are smaller and lighter than regular punching mitts and are ideal for very fast pad work.

Generally, these are used by advanced fighters.

Is Rival's Super Rich Microfiber just as strong as genuine leather?

Yes. This material has been proven to be at least as strong as genuine leather. In addition, it retains its color better and is less susceptible to tearing and temperature fluctuations.

What can I use punching mitts for?

Punching mitts are primarily used to practice fast punches, combinations, and defensive techniques.

They are designed to help the practitioner develop speed, precision, reflexes, fitness, and coordination. Punching mitts are also portable and easy to use, making them ideal for one-on-one training sessions.

Use punching mitts to:

  • Improve precision and technique
  • Improve speed and reflexes
  • Improve strength and endurance
  • Improve coverage and defense
  • Simulate realistic combat scenarios safely
  • Reduce injuries
What are the benefits of focus pads?

With small (lightweight) focus pads, you can train hand-and-foot combinations extremely quickly and easily.

Especially in ITF Taekwon-do, the (usually round) focus pads are an indispensable training tool.

They are exceptionally suitable for tactical awareness exercises, conditioning drills, and precision training.

How do you hold focus pads?

A major advantage of focus pads over regular punching mitts is that you can almost always hold them in two ways: with the palm facing up or the palm facing down.

This offers many more possibilities for comfortably signaling techniques correctly, without the risk of twisting or bruising your wrists.

For example, you can hold the focus pads out in front of you, against your body, or next to your head (for roundhouse kicks).

Focus pads usually have both a handle and a strap that your wrist/forearm goes through.

What do you use Thai pads for?

Thai pads, also known as kick pads or pao, are larger, elongated pads held by a trainer to practice punches, but primarily hard kicks .

They are usually made of thick foam and have a sturdy handle on the back for the trainer to hold.

Thai pads are designed to help practitioners practice powerful kicks, such as cross kicks, high kicks, knee strikes, and elbow strikes.

What are hybrid pads?

Hybrid pads are a combination of large Thai pads and small punching mitts.

Hybrid pads offer the convenience, speed, and versatility of both types of pads. This makes them suitable not only for punches and hand techniques, but also for kicks.

They are generally heavier than regular punching mitts, but considerably lighter than Thai pads.

This allows coaches and personal trainers to conduct extended training sessions covering all techniques..
