What size boxing gloves does my child need?

Children usually train with 6 oz, 8 oz, or 10 oz boxing gloves. Very occasionally, for very young children, there are even 2 oz or 4 oz gloves.

The following are general guidelines. For each brand and model

Choosing by age:

up to 3–4 years – 2 oz
up to 4–5 years – 4 oz
up to 6–8 years – 6 oz
up to 9–11 years – 8 oz
from 12 years – 10 oz

Choosing by body weight

up to 35 kg – 6 oz
35 – 45 kg – 8 oz
45 – 55 kg – 10 oz

The rule of thumb is: “the heavier the child in question, the heavier the boxing glove should be”. A heavier boxing glove generally has more padding and is therefore safer for the hands and the training partner. Trainers generally also prefer you to use heavier boxing gloves rather than lighter ones.

Should my child wear inner gloves or handwraps?

Wearing inner gloves is recommended for small children who sweat a lot. The sweat is absorbed by the inner gloves, which you can then wash. This keeps the gloves fresh for longer.

For older children, we recommend wearing handwraps. These provide more support and protection. The trainer should decide what is best.
