Bag gloves vs. Boxing gloves – what is the difference?

Boxing gloves are designed for sparren – they have thick, soft padding that protects the opponent on impact. Bag gloves are designed for bag training – they have more compact, denser padding that protects the hands and knuckles from the hard, repeated impact on the bag.

The KPB BG has an open thumb – a characteristic of bag gloves that provides more feel and grip when holding the bag and during combinations. Not suitable for sparren, but ideal for intensive bag training.

Frequently Asked Questions — King Pro Boxing KPB BG Bag gloves

Why should I use bag gloves?

Most of our customers actually don’t want to purchase more than 1 pair of boxing gloves, although that is usually the best choice. choice If you regularly train on a punching bag (or with hand pads), it is definitely wiser to purchase separate bag gloves for this purpose. As a result, both pairs will also last much longer.

Benefits of bag gloves on the punching bag:

  • Bag gloves have a flatter striking surface and flatter padding, which transfers less impact to the wrists when using proper technique.
  • Bag gloves are smaller and lighter. This allows you to punch much faster and more precisely.
  • Your sparring boxing gloves will last much longer because the padding is not being beaten against the punching bag.
  • Bag gloves usually last much longer when used on a punching bag.

What is the difference between bag gloves and boxing gloves?

Bag gloves and Boxing gloves are both used during (kick)boxing training, but they serve different purposes and have different features.

Bag gloves are specifically designed for punching bag and pad training. They have less padding and often less wrist support. This provides more feedback and allows for faster combinations.

Boxing gloves, on the other hand, are used for sparring and potentially competitions, with an emphasis on protection and safety through thicker padding and greater wrist support.

Bag glove features:

  • Purpose: specifically designed for punching bags and pad training, to promote speed and precision.
  • Padding: less padding compared with Boxing gloves, providing more feedback on impact. The materials have a much higher density to withstand repeated impact.
  • Wrist support: less wrist support, to promote proper punching technique. However, this is not always the case; many Rival bag gloves have excellent wrist support (Wrist-Lock 2).
  • Fit: a smaller, tighter fit for better wrist stabilization.
  • Weight: lighter, for faster punches and combinations. Usually 8 oz or 10 oz.
  • Design: usually features an unattached thumb and sometimes no hook-and-loop closure or laces for quick putting on and removal.
How heavy are bag gloves?

Bag gloves, which are used for training on a punching bag or pads, are usually much lighter than sparring gloves.

They are usually between 6 oz and 12 oz (170 to 340 grams).

Unlike regular boxing gloves, bag gloves are usually offered in standard sizes such as S, M, L, and XL rather than ounces, because they are designed to fit the boxer’s hand properly.

For comparison, sparring gloves are usually between 12 oz and 18 oz (340 and 520 grams), with much more padding for protection during training with a partner.
