In 1978, one of the first martial arts stores (by Super Pro) was opened in Rotterdam. Rotterdam has always been considered a boxing city. It is home to Bep van Klaveren "The Dutch Windmill", the 1928 Olympic champion. It is also home to former WBO world champion Regilio Tuur, former WBU world champion Don Diego Poeder, and many others.

Punching mitts and focus pads are compact targets for focused pad work, usually involving punches or light precision techniques. Thai pads are held against the arm and are designed for combinations that also include kicks.

Punching shields provide a larger target for punching combinations. A kicking shield is designed for kick training and has a different shape and grip. Size alone does not determine how much impact is safe; adjust your technique and intensity to the specific pad and the person holding it.

That depends on the exercise, the feel you want on contact, and the experience of the athlete and pad holder. A softer pad feels different on impact; a firmer pad can provide more direct feedback.

Don’t choose solely based on the rule that soft pads are for beginners and firm pads are for advanced athletes. Size, thickness, material, contact surface, and how the pad is held also matter. Neither type makes striking incorrectly or training too hard safe.

For youth drills, assess whether the size and weight of the Super Pro pad suit both the athlete and the pad holder. The intended striking surfaces and type of drill matter more than age alone.

Increase the intensity gradually to suit the participants. Thick padding or an angled shape does not mean that a misplaced strike is risk-free.
