Bag gloves
Bag gloves are used for training on the punching bag. The gloves are specially designed for striking punching bags. Read more
Regular boxing gloves are less suitable for training on the punching bag due to the softer padding.
Fight2Win offers bag gloves in various price ranges and from different top brands for intensive punching bag training.
Bag gloves or boxing gloves for the punching bag?
Most of our customers actually don’t want to buy more than one pair of boxing gloves, although that is usually the best choice. If you regularly train on a punching bag, it is really wiser to purchase separate bag gloves for that purpose. Both pairs will also last much longer as a result.
You can of course train on a bag with regular (sparring) boxing gloves, but keep in mind that they are actually not made for that.
The padding of sparring gloves is much softer to ensure safety when training with a partner and during sparring. If you then beat up that padding on a punching bag, they quickly no longer provide the protection they were intended and built for.
Advice for beginners and advanced users
For beginners who don’t train very often and don’t punch too hard, it is fine to use simple boxing gloves on a punching bag. In fact, it is probably even better for that group to use regular boxing gloves.
Why? Because regular boxing gloves are bigger, offer more protection to the entire hand, and always have a very important feature: the thumb protector.
If your technique is not very good yet, you will get more protection with a regular boxing glove, and poor technique will be punished less harshly.
Advantages of regular boxing gloves on the punching bag (for beginners):
- Boxing gloves protect the entire hand
- Boxing gloves always have a thumb protector, so your thumb can never bend backward
- Boxing gloves often have better wrist support, although that is not always the case anymore!
However, always use handwraps to sufficiently support and protect your hands and wrists! You can use either short or long handwraps of 250 cm or 450 cm for this.
The most common size of handwraps for adults is 450 cm (180 inches). Check out our extensive collection of boxing wraps in our webshop.
Bag gloves for advanced boxers and kickboxers
If you train more often and sometimes even full sessions on the heavy bag, it is better to use separate (smaller) bag gloves for that. Many boxers also choose a regular boxing glove in a more compact size.
On Instagram, for example, you can see plenty of professionals and former professionals training on the bag with 10 oz Winning or 12 oz Cleto Reyes.
Bag gloves are much more compact than boxing gloves and usually weigh around 8 oz or 10 oz. The padding is much denser and specially made for intensive training on the bag.
These bag gloves are also often used for pads training. You can still keep using handwraps. In fact, they are still recommended.
Advantages of bag gloves on the punching bag:
- Bag gloves have a flatter striking surface and flatter padding, which transmits less impact to the wrists with correct technique
- Bag gloves are smaller and lighter, allowing you to punch much faster and more precisely
- Your sparring boxing gloves will last much longer because the padding is not destroyed on the punching bag
- Bag gloves usually last much longer on a punching bag
Bag gloves are usually made of microfiber, PU, or genuine leather. We are big fans of the Rival bag gloves. The RB50 model bag gloves are very competitively priced and offer the best price-quality ratio.
If you really want to go "old-school" with minimal restrictions and emphasis on conditioning your hands and technique, definitely consider the minimalist RB5 bag gloves.
Rival Boxing Gear has a large number of different series of bag gloves in the collection across many price ranges.
Rival has also implemented many innovations in their bag gloves, such as the V-strap Wrist Lock 2 and d3O technologies. In many Rival bag gloves, your hands feel just as protected as in a regular boxing glove.
Classic bag gloves
Twins, King Pro, and Cleto Reyes have the more classic bag gloves with open thumb or loose thumb. These are more traditional bag gloves where you also have to pay close attention to your punching technique because the thumbs have a clearly different position than in regular boxing gloves.
