Punching mitts: basic equipment in every serious gym

Punching mitts belong in every gym, but you can also easily take a set in your sports bag and train with a partner practically anywhere: indoors or outdoors.

Punching mitts, also called punching shields, are compact punching pads held by a trainer/partner during a training session. They are usually made of foam padding and have a sturdy exterior to protect the trainer who absorbs the strikes.

Punching mitts are mainly used to practice fast punches, combinations, and defense techniques. They are designed to help the practitioner develop speed, precision, reflexes, conditioning, and coordination.

Punching mitts are also portable and easy to use, making them ideal for one-on-one training sessions.

Types of punching mitts

There are different types of punching mitts that vary in size, materials, hand grips or compartments, build quality, weight, and closure.

Size of punching mitts:

  • Micro
  • Medium
  • Large

The smallest types of punching mitts (micro punching shields) are generally used by experienced and professional boxers, kickboxers, and other martial artists. The striking surface is very small, requiring the boxer to respond very precisely to the feeder. For the person holding the punching mitts, it is very comfortable that these micro pads are very light, allowing them to be “fed” quickly.

Medium punching mitts also vary somewhat in size among themselves but are almost all about the same dimensions. This is the most common type of punching mitt and can be used by almost anyone regardless of level, gender, or age.

Relatively new are the larger hybrid punching mitts, especially those from King Pro, Booster, and Twins Special, which stand out in our assortment. They are usually relatively expensive but offer great value for the money.

With the mentioned hybrid pads, you can do almost everything: from absorbing punches to kicks and even knee techniques. They are almost all-in-one solutions to replace all other boxing pads, thai pads, kicking and punching shields.

Hand compartment and closures:

  • Open fingers / closed fingers
  • With hook & loop closure, without closure
  • With wrist support, without wrist support

Manufacturers make different choices when producing punching mitts. Some have open fingers (for better ventilation), others a closed hand (for better protection).

Some pads are only worn with a slip-in hand, while other models have an adjustable closure. This is mainly a matter of personal preference and not so much a question of good or bad.

Regarding wrist support and ergonomics, this is usually the case. There is quite a price difference between cheap and more expensive punching mitts, but this is usually also clearly visible in wearing comfort and build quality. The more expensive punching mitts almost all have a superior, comfortable, and ergonomic fit.

Weight of punching mitts:

This is not necessarily a matter of build quality. Some are very light pads (such as Rival Airpads) that are extremely durable.

Light punching mitts are especially comfortable for long-term use by a trainer, but usually a bit of weight is also desired and the heavier pads are somewhat sturdier. However, this is not necessarily the case and varies per brand and price range.

We have weighed all punching mitts in our assortment and added this information in a size chart with the respective product!
