Boxing Scotland

Boxing Scotland, formally Boxing Scotland Limited, is the national governing body for Olympic boxing in Scotland. The organization is based at the national high-performance sports center in the Olympia Theatre in Glasgow, which it calls the home of Scottish boxing.

Profile

The board holds ultimate responsibility for policy and strategic direction and is led by Chair Kevin Bell, a lawyer specialising in international trade law who previously served as a director of GB Boxing for three years.

The board also comprises Martin Henry, a forensic social worker who previously chaired the independent inquiry into sexual abuse in Scottish football; finance director Lesley-Anne Junner; Darryl Broadfoot, responsible for marketing and communications; and Frank Delaney, a former boxer who has been involved in the sport for more than sixty years and has coached at Springhill Amateur Boxing Club in Shotts for forty-five years, producing champions at European and world level. The chief executive and sportscotland's partnership manager attend board meetings.

Over the years

History

Boxing Scotland was founded in 2000 with the mission of promoting and developing boxing in Scotland. The association is recognized by the Scottish Government, sportscotland, and UK Sport as the only officially recognized national governing body for Olympic boxing in Scotland.

Activities and role

The association manages club affiliation, membership, medical examinations, competition regulations and officiating, and publishes a coaching handbook. Its training programme ranges from its own BSL1 and BSL2 courses to refereeing, judging and timekeeping, as well as courses on the welfare and protection of children.

The country is divided into four districts with their own development officers: East, North, West-South and West-North. Tournaments include the Robert Burns Box Cup, which received more than two hundred and fifty entries in 2026, alongside the national championships for elite, youth and intermediate competitors.

The national performance programme has its own staff and squads, including a Next Generation group. Anti-doping is handled through UK Anti-Doping, with its own guidance on strict liability and on supplements and nutrition.

Membership and participation

Boxing Scotland is Scotland's national governing body and, alongside England Boxing and Welsh Boxing, is affiliated with the international federation World Boxing. On its own website, the organization still describes its recognition using the older wording, as the national governing body for AIBA Open Boxing recognized by the International Boxing Association.

The organization is also one of the three stakeholders behind GB Boxing and provides two board members. Scottish boxers compete internationally for Scotland and at the Commonwealth Games for Team Scotland; only at the Olympic Games do they box for Great Britain.

Impact and meaning

Boxing is the only sport that has won a medal for Team Scotland at every edition of the Commonwealth Games since 1930 a record the federation is clearly proud of. The 2023-2027 strategic plan summarizes its direction as including, influencing and inspiring, with sub-strategies for equality, development, safety, communication and anti-doping education. Its core values are reliability, respect, responsibility, fairness, care and good citizenship. The federation explicitly presents itself as inclusive, with its own inclusion toolkit and an entry pathway for volunteers and coaches.
