Overview

Karate, also karate-dō (空手道), is a martial art that developed in the historic Ryukyu Kingdom, present-day Okinawa. The Okinawan tradition of te, literally “hand”, was influenced by Chinese martial arts over the centuries and later took on a new form on the Japanese mainland.

Karate is both a budō, a self-defense system, and a competitive sport. The foundation of training consists of kihon, kata and kumite. Each school emphasizes different aspects: Shotokan focuses on long stances and linear techniques, Gōjū-ryū on hard and soft, Wadō-ryū on evasion, and Kyokushin on full contact and knockdown.

From Okinawa, karate spread via Japan to Europe, North and South America, Asia, Oceania and Africa. It became part of the international competition circuit and made its Olympic debut in Tokyo 2020.
