What is Sumo?

Sumo (相撲, sumō) is a Japanese full-contact wrestling sport. Two rikishi try to force each other out of the circular dohyō or make their opponent touch the ground with a body part other than the soles of their feet. This is done by pushing, pulling, throwing, unbalancing, and grabbing the mawashi, among other techniques.

Sumo is simultaneously a sport, a professional institution, and a tradition in which Shinto rituals play a visible role. The modern professional form, ōzumō, exists alongside amateur sumo and historical or recreational forms.

Early history and religious traditions

Japanese origin stories connect wrestling with gods and rituals for a good harvest. The Kojiki (712) and Nihon Shoki (720) contain early written references, including mythical contests between kami. These stories are important sources for the cultural significance of Sumo, but they are not a direct account of the date when the modern sport originated.

A historically documented match at the imperial court dates to 642. During the Nara and Heian periods, sumai no sechie developed into a court ceremony. Later, Sumo gradually shifted from a court ritual to military training, popular entertainment, and organized professional sport.

The Middle Ages and Edo period

During the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, Sumo also became associated with samurai, military training, and patronage by daimyō. In the sixteenth century, Oda Nobunaga organized large tournaments; such events contributed to the development of a defined circular arena.

During the Edo period, many features of modern professional Sumo became recognizable, including heya, gyōji, mawashi, dohyō-iri, and organized tournaments. Notable historical names include Raiden Tameemon and Tanikaze Kajinosuke.

From the Meiji period to the present

After the Meiji Restoration of 1868, Sumo initially lost status as feudal sponsors disappeared and Western culture was regarded as a modern ideal. An imperial tournament in 1884 helped restore public appreciation. In the twentieth century, the professional organization, tournament schedule, and ranking structure were further standardized.

Ritual and religious context

Before and during a professional tournament, rituals such as the dohyō-iri, sprinkling salt, and drinking chikara-mizu are visible. These actions are often associated with purification, respect, and the Shinto context of the dohyō.

The religious significance of sumo is historically important, but the modern sport is not exclusively a religious ceremony. The precise meaning of rituals may vary depending on the context, source, and interpretation.

Training and technique

Professional rikishi train in a heya under the guidance of an oyakata. Training can include shiko, butsukari-geiko, teppo exercises, standing bouts, and match simulations. The combination of balance, leg strength, timing, hip use, and explosiveness is more important than body weight alone.

The Japan Sumo Association recognizes 82 kimarite, the official winning techniques. Examples include oshidashi, pushing an opponent out of the dohyō, and uwatenage, a throw in which the opponent is pulled over via the outside of the mawashi. The technique used is announced by the gyōji after the match.

Nutrition and recovery

Chankonabe, a flexible hot pot containing, among other things, broth, protein, and vegetables, is a well-known meal in many heya. Large portions, rice, rest after meals, and training loads can contribute to weight gain, but the exact lifestyle varies by stable and individual.

Professional Sumo

Ōzumō is organized by the Japan Sumo Association. Professional wrestlers generally live and train in a heya. The six divisions, from lowest to highest, are jonokuchi, jonidan, sandanme, makushita, jūryō, and makuuchi. Wrestlers in jūryō and makuuchi are called sekitori and have more privileges and a different status than those in the lower ranks.

Within makuuchi, the ranking runs from maegashira through komusubi, sekiwake, and ōzeki to yokozuna. A yokozuna cannot simply be demoted; when performance or health no longer matches the rank, the wrestler is generally expected to retire.

Honbasho and rules

Traditionally, there are six major honbasho each year, held across Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. A honbasho lasts fifteen days. The winner of a division is the wrestler with the most victories; in the event of a tie, a playoff may follow. The three sanshō prizes reward technique, fighting spirit, and outstanding performances in the top division.

Prohibited actions include choking, hair-pulling, bending fingers, kicking, eye-gouging, and punching with a closed fist. The gyōji indicates the winner with the gunbai, but the shimpan can review the decision in a mono-ii or order a torinaoshi.

Sumo outside Japan

Amateur sumo is practiced internationally, with weight classes and competitions for men and women. The International Sumo Federation organizes or supports international championships. The amateur form differs in important respects from professional ōzumō, including the participation of women, age and weight classes, and less elaborate ceremonies.

Europe, Brazil, and the United States have active amateur traditions. European competitors often come from judo, wrestling, or sambo. Brazil developed a strong infrastructure through the Japanese diaspora and also has a significant women’s sumo scene. National organizations emerged early in the United Kingdom; the current umbrella structure should be verified with the relevant federation.

Amateur sumo and international rules

International amateur competitions generally use weight classes, age categories, and separate categories for women and men. The classification and eligibility rules may vary by federation and championship. Sumo is not an Olympic sport, although international organizations are seeking recognition within the global sports community and the discipline has been featured at several multisport events.

Body and health

Professional sumo requires a combination of strength, mobility, technique, and fitness. A large body can be an advantage, but does not determine the outcome on its own. Research on active rikishi and former wrestlers points to health risks associated with body weight, training load, alcohol, joints, and the transition to life after a career. The extent of these risks varies by individual and research.

Career and hierarchy

Professional life in a heya is strongly hierarchical. Lower ranks have different housing, clothing, and duty requirements from sekitori. Promotion and demotion result from performances during official honbasho. Salaries, bonuses, prize money, and sponsorship amounts vary by rank and may change over time.

Learn Sumo

Anyone who wants to learn Sumo can join an amateur club, school, university, or specialized association. Look for a trainer who uses safe falling, pushing, pulling, and wrestling exercises and clearly distinguishes between amateur Sumo, professional ōzumō, and recreational training. The rituals and clothing of professional Sumo do not automatically have to be part of every lesson.
