What is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai, also called thai boxing in Dutch, is a Thai full-contact martial art that combines punches, elbows, knees, and shins. That is why the sport is often called the art of eight limbs .

Muay Thai's identity is not defined by techniques alone. Active clinch work, standing control, off-balancing, the Wai Kru Ram Muay, the relationship between trainer and gym, and the various Thai competition traditions are all part of the bigger story.

Muay Thai has had a major influence on international kickboxing and MMA, but it is not the same as every kickboxing variant. The rules, scoring, clinch duration, permitted elbows and knees, sweeps, and protective equipment vary by governing body, promotion, age group, and competition.

A practitioner is called a nak muay in Thai. Western practitioners are sometimes referred to in Thailand as nak muay farang.
