What is Pencak Silat?

Pencak Silat is a broad family of Indigenous martial arts from the Indonesian archipelago and neighboring regions with historically Malay populations. In modern contexts, the name refers to a tradition that brings together striking, kicking, grappling, throwing, joint locks, weapons, set forms, self-defense, culture, and inner development.

Pencak Silat is not a uniform style. There are hundreds of aliran, or styles, and perguruan, or schools. Some emphasize sport, while others focus on seni, beladiri, weapons, or religious or spiritual training. Regional variation is as extensive as the archipelago itself.

The four aspects

PERSILAT describes Pencak Silat as an integration of four aspects: mental and spiritual development, culture and art (seni budaya), self-defense (beladiri), and sport (olahraga). No school develops these aspects in exactly the same way.

• Tanding - regulated competition format with sparring.
• Seni - set and creative forms, performed solo, in pairs, or as a team, often with traditional clothing and music.
• Beladiri - self-defense and practical application, always depending on the style.
• Mental and spiritual - character development, self-control, breathing exercises, and, in some traditions, religious or meditative development.

Etymology and regional terminology

Silat is a collective term for indigenous martial arts in Nusantara and other Southeast Asian regions with historically Malay populations. The word is often associated with the Minangkabau word silek. Pencak is related to the Sundanese penca from West Java.

Pencak silat was chosen in 1948 as a unifying Indonesian term. Pencak primarily referred to practices in West, Central, and East Java, while silat was common in Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula, and Borneo. In a classic Minangkabau explanation, pencak is the visible training and expressive aspect, while silat is the applied combat and self-defense aspect.

Other regional terms include silek, penca, mancak, manca, ameng, ulin, maen po, main pukulan, and pukulan. Dutch colonial spellings included pentjak, pentjah, mentjak, mentjah, and poekoelan. Explanations derived from the Sanskrit pancha or Chinese terms for parrying and striking remain speculative.

Historical development

Archaeological and visual sources show that the archipelago had a rich weapons culture from an early period. Depictions at Borobudur, Prambanan, and Penataran, among other sites, show swords, shields, staffs, bows, and dagger-like weapons. The Aji Saka legend and other stories are important cultural traditions, but not direct evidence of an exact starting point for Pencak Silat.

The earliest structured Minangkabau traditions are dated to the sixth century in the sources provided. Martial arts developed further in the kingdoms and trading regions of Sumatra and Java. Indian, Chinese, Islamic, and local influences converged in an archipelago that was continually connected to other regions through maritime trade.

During the colonial period, local weapons and guerrilla tactics were used in resistance to European power. After Indonesian independence, Pencak Silat played a role in shaping national identity. IPSI was founded in 1948 as the national umbrella organization; PERSILAT followed in 1980 as the international federation.

Modern sport and international competitions

Pencak Silat has been included in the Southeast Asian Games since 1987 and made its debut at the Asian Games in 2018. The most important international tournament is the PERSILAT Pencak Silat World Championship, which is generally held every two or three years.

The main competition categories are Tanding, Tunggal, Ganda, Regu, and Solo Creative. Tanding is the competition format involving two participants. Tunggal is an individual format, Ganda a pair performance, Regu a team format, and Solo Creative an individual creative presentation.

The world championships began in Jakarta in 1982. Later editions were held, among other places, in Vienna, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, The Hague, Jakarta, Hat Yai, Penang, Pahang, Chiang Rai, Phuket, Denpasar, and Malacca. The Hague hosted the event in 1990. The exact number of participants and events varies by edition.

Education and modern systems

In Indonesia, Pencak Silat is offered and practiced as an extracurricular activity in many places and during national and international sporting events. Modern systems may combine traditional training with sports rules. Tarung Derajat, by contrast, is an Indonesian hybrid system developed in the 1960s by Haji Achmad Dradjat, incorporating boxing, kicking, grappling, and sweeps.

Training, steps and forms

Training varies by school, but often begins with body posture, stances and steps. Langkah are footwork patterns and changes of direction; langkah 8 penjuru refers to the eight directions. The basic kuda-kuda or kekuda stance provides stability. Other stances include the central, side and forward stances. Minang Silek also features a low tiger stance.

Jurus are set sequences of steps and movements for technique, coordination, conditioning and form memory. They can be performed solo, with a partner or in a group. Kembang refers to the flowing, flower-like layer of movement that also evokes Indonesian dance. Music can support the rhythm of a form.

Technical terms include pukulan for striking, tendangan for kicking, kuncian for locks, tangkisan for blocking, elakan for evasion and pesongan for redirecting. Execution varies greatly by style. Modern classes should use expert guidance, safe training equipment, a suitable space and appropriate competition protection.

Offense and defense as a field of study

Pencak Silat uses the whole body in its terminology and includes both hard and soft, direct and evasive approaches. Regional preferences are often described as emphasizing more legwork in West and North Sumatra, more hand and arm work in Jakarta, West Java, Sulawesi and Kalimantan, more grappling in East Java and Sumatra, and combinations of hand and foot techniques in Bali, Central Java and Madura.

This classification is a guide, not a fixed rule for every school. Dangerous weapon applications, injury-focused techniques and disarming should be practiced only in controlled training under qualified supervision.

Weapons and equipment

Historically, many Pencak Silat schools had a strong weapons tradition. Commonly mentioned weapons include toya or galah, tombak or lembing, parang, golok, pisau, kris, celurit, tongkat, pedang, klewang, cabang, selendang, and kerambit. Regional schools also use their own weapons, such as badik, rencong, mandau, kujang, karih, sabik, payung, raut, and piau.

The meaning and use of a weapon vary from one community to another. Some objects served agricultural, ceremonial, hunting, and martial purposes at the same time. Modern clubs generally use safe rattan, rubber, or other training versions for technical practice and comply with local laws.

Kuntao and related martial arts

Kuntao is a Hokkien term for martial art and in Indonesia primarily refers to the traditions of Chinese communities. Chinese systems such as thaikek, pakua, and peh-ho influenced local schools. In some areas, Kuntao and Pencak Silat overlap, but they are not the same everywhere.

Other Indonesian martial arts and related practices include Caci, Fitimaen, Tinju, Pasola, Debus, Payuq, Sisemba, Cakalele, Mekare-kare, Kabasaran, and historical dueling traditions. They are not automatically Pencak Silat and may be primarily ritual, agricultural, cultural, or local sporting practices.

Pencak Silat in the Netherlands

Pencak Silat came to Europe from the 1950s onward with repatriates and Dutch people of Indonesian descent. Founders such as Bapak Hardjono and Verdi Phefferkorn von Offenbach are mentioned in Dutch sources in connection with the early schools in Utrecht, Zeist and elsewhere. This history led to the development of a nationwide network.

According to the sources provided, the Dutch Pencak Silat Federation, NPSF, represents the sport in the Netherlands and is affiliated with PERSILAT and the Federation of Eastern Martial Arts. The sport structure includes Tanding and Seni, including Tunggal and Ganda. Seni can be performed in traditional clothing and with gamelan, kendang or other musical accompaniment.

Dutch sources mention approximately 60 styles at more than 90 locations. Examples include Setia Hati in Zaandijk and Utrecht, Merpati Putih in The Hague, Panglipur Ratu Siliwangi as a women's club, and Ciung Wanara in Groningen. Figures and training locations are snapshots in time and may change.

Pencak Silat is included in the Dutch Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The exact recognition by sports authorities and federations may change; current details about membership, competitions and affiliation should therefore be checked with NPSF, the relevant association and official sports sources.

Regional styles in Sulawesi and the Maluku Islands

Bugis and Makassar traditions from Sulawesi are connected to maritime communities, local animist beliefs, and the distinctive role of the badik. According to the descriptions, Silat Ugi primarily uses hand and arm techniques, with limited linear legwork. Silat Makassar includes Karena Macang and the secretive Tapu Silat, among others. These names and accounts are described as source-specific, not as general characteristics of entire population groups.

Aceh lies on the northwest coast of Sumatra and has influences from Indian, Islamic, Silat Melayu, and Minangkabau traditions. The rencong and kris are characteristic weapons in historical descriptions. Batak traditions are called mossak, moncak, ndikar, or dihar, depending on the community. The Maluku Islands feature cabang, pisau, galah, and pedang, among others, in regional martial arts contexts.

The Bajau of Sulawesi are a seafaring community. Their Kendari style is described as using crossed stances and rapid turning movements, suited to confined spaces such as boats. The fishing spear holds an important place in oral tradition, alongside weapons obtained through regional contacts.

Ritual and regional forms

Kabasaran is a Minahasa war dance from North Sulawesi featuring red clothing, nine jurus, and symbolic swords or spears. Cakalele is a Malukan war dance involving mock combat, a spear, a long knife, a salawaku shield, and accompaniment by tifa, gong, and suling. These forms are important heritage, but not modern competitive sports.

Ritual combat and local fighting practices

Caci from Flores is a festival and dueling tradition involving a whip or stick and a shield. Pasola from West Sumba is an equestrian tradition involving blunt spears, associated with the harvest, ancestors, and the end of the rainy season. Sisemba of the Toraja is a mass kicking tradition performed during the rice harvest. Village elders maintain order.

Payuq is a Dayak wrestling style from East Kalimantan, primarily associated with Kenyah communities. The related Kutai style is called bebintih. Mekare-kare, or perang pandan, is a Balinese ritual combat tradition involving pandan clubs and a shield in Tenganan. Debus from Banten and West Java is a spiritual demonstration centered on supposed invulnerability.

Historical dueling forms such as sitobo lalang lipa or sigajang laleng lipa from Bugis contexts are now shown only in cultural reconstructions. The traditions surrounding honor, adat, siri, and pesse are important to the context, but lethal duels and dangerous weapon use are not a contemporary sporting practice.

Dutch schools and sports culture

Dutch schools combine traditional lineage, competitive sport, and cultural education in different ways. Setia Hati, Merpati Putih, Panglipur Ratu Siliwangi, and Ciung Wanara illustrate this variety, but do not represent all Dutch styles.

Tanding uses current competition rules and protective equipment. Seni focuses on technique, presentation, rhythm, and form, with Tunggal, Ganda, Regu, and Solo Creative as well-known categories. Self-defense and breath control vary by school and should not be presented as a single uniform Dutch method.

Training safely

Anyone who wants to learn Pencak Silat should choose a club with experienced instructors, clear safety rules, and up-to-date information about competition or training equipment. In a sports context, weapons should preferably be replaced with safe training versions. Historical traditions involving knives, sticks, whips, and spears are not instructions for use outside the dojo.

Pencak Silat in film and popular culture

In Indonesia, there is a silat genre of historical stories about warriors, with roots in oral and theatrical traditions, hikayat, novels, comics, television, and film. Saur Sepuh, Tutur Tinular, and Misteri Gunung Merapi are well-known examples. Modern laga productions are distinguished by their contemporary settings.

Merantau (2009) brought Indonesian action cinema and Pencak Silat to international attention. The Raid: Redemption (2011) became a major international catalyst, followed by The Raid 2: Berandal. The films are influential in terms of choreography, but portray cinematic violence rather than normal sports training.

Pencak Silat and Indonesian fighters also appeared in John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Mile 22, and Beyond Skyline. Iko Uwais, Yayan Ruhian, and Cecep Arif Rahman brought their expertise to these productions. Some scenes combine Pencak Silat with Kali, Kuntao, stunt work, and other close-combat traditions.

The karambit, fast close combat, and the use of elbows and knees are recognizable cinematic motifs, but not every scene is a faithful depiction of a single Indonesian style. The knife fight in Captain America: The Winter Soldier is also better described as reflecting broader close-combat and Filipino Kali influences than as purely Pencak Silat.

Heritage, sport and representation

Pencak Silat brings together regional history, migration, religion, music, dance, weapons culture, self-defense and modern competitive sport. The tradition can simultaneously be a form of seni, beladiri, sport and cultural memory.

The Indonesian tradition was recognized by UNESCO in 2019 as Indonesian intangible cultural heritage. In the Netherlands, Pencak Silat is likewise described as intangible heritage. The precise significance of recognition, affiliation with a governing body and sporting status must always be based on the current official source.

From Minangkabau Silek and Javanese jurus to Dutch Tanding and international film choreography, Pencak Silat is not a single system but a living family of styles in which local identity and modern sport continue to influence each other.
