Overview

What is MMA?

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a full-contact combat sport based on two major groups of techniques: striking and grapplingStriking includes punches, kicks, knees, and elbows. Grappling includes clinching, takedowns, throws, control positions, escapes, sweeps, joint locks, and chokes.

MMA is not a traditional style that simply adds up all other martial arts. Boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, wrestling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, judo, sambo, karate, and other disciplines are adapted to an environment where stand-up fighting, the cage, clinching, and ground fighting constantly flow into one another.

A bout can be won by knockout, technical knockout, submission, decision, disqualification, forfeit, or no contest. The exact rules, round duration, permitted techniques, and clothing vary by commission and promotion.

The UFC is the best-known international MMA promotion, but the sport is organized worldwide by a range of promotions with their own weight classes, matchmaking, and regulations.
