Early Sources and Uncertain Origins

Before and during Spanish colonization, the Philippines had diverse local weapons traditions. Early Spanish accounts from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries describe fighters with spears, knives, swords, shields, and other weapons. These sources show that armed martial arts existed, but they do not prove that these practices were identical to a modern Eskrima system.

A frequently cited early reference point is 1610, when Spanish sources described various local terms and weapons practices. This is not an established founding year. The history was partly transmitted orally, and many later origin stories are difficult to verify independently.

Colonial Contacts

Spanish colonial soldiers and local warriors encountered different weapons traditions. Spanish terminology such as esgrima, estoque, estocada and garrote suggests linguistic and possibly technical influence, but a word alone is not evidence of a style’s direct descent.

Local traditions continued to develop within families, communities, military contexts, dance forms, and folk performances. The use of rattan as training material and the survival of regional lineages are often associated with periods when carrying large blades was subject to restrictions; the precise extent of such restrictions varied by place and period.

Twentieth Century and the Diaspora

In the twentieth century, various systems were taught more systematically and spread internationally. Names appearing in modern sources include Doce Pares, Balintawak, Kalis Ilustrisimo, Modern Arnis, Pekiti Tirsia Kali and Lameco Eskrima. These are different systems and lineages, not synonyms for one uniform style.

Filipino migrants brought Arnis and Eskrima to places including Hawaii and California from the 1920s onward. From the late 1960s, the art was increasingly taught outside Filipino communities there. International seminars, hybrid systems, and sports organizations followed later.

Sport and Contemporary Spread

Alongside traditional and self-defense-oriented schools, regulated competition formats exist with protective equipment, rattan sticks, and rules for full-contact competition. The WEKAF was founded in 1989; other national, regional, and style-specific organizations also exist.

Important systems

Examples of well-known systems and lineages include Balintawak Eskrima, Doce Pares, Eskrido, Kalis Ilustrisimo, Modern Arnis, Kombatan, Lameco Eskrima, Lightning Scientific Arnis, Pekiti Tirsia Kali, and San Miguel Eskrima. The list is not exhaustive. Founders, successors, and current representatives must be verified separately for each system.

International systems

Through the Filipino diaspora, systems also emerged and spread in the United States, Australia, and Europe. Examples include Bahala Na Escrima, Cabales Serrada Escrima, Inosanto Kali, Integrated Eskrima, Sayoc Kali, and Sistema Birada.

A system taught internationally is not automatically less authentic, but a careful description distinguishes between source tradition, personal blend, sports organization, and commercial teaching name.

History and source criticism

Early colonial accounts are valuable but have a clear perspective. They can document weapons use, military contacts, and regional names, but do not by themselves prove the direct origin of a modern system.

The terms Eskrima, Arnis, and Kali are sometimes used as synonyms, but this usage is not universal. In particular, the historical claim that Kali was the original name for all Filipino martial arts remains disputed.

Safety and responsibility

Eskrima may include training with sticks, knives, and other weapons. Practice only with suitable training equipment, protective gear, and a qualified instructor. Sharp or hard weapons, improvised objects, and uncontrolled bouts carry serious risks.

Self-defense claims are not a guarantee of safe or effective action in a real confrontation. De-escalation, local laws, medical knowledge, and avoiding violence should come first.
