K-1

History and origins

K-1 was founded in 1993 by Kazuyoshi Ishii, a Japanese karate champion who envisioned a tournament that would answer the age-old question: which striking sport produces the best fighters? The first K-1 World Grand Prix was held in Tokyo in 1993 and immediately captured the imagination of martial arts fans worldwide.

By the mid-1990s, the Dutch dynasty was in full force. In the 2000s, K-1 World MAX launched for fighters under 70 kg. It introduced the world to Buakaw Banchamek and showed that Muay Thai could dominate on the international stage.

The original K-1 organization collapsed in 2011. Its spiritual successor, GLORY Kickboxing, was founded in 2012 and continues the tradition, with Rico Verhoeven as the undisputed heavyweight champion since 2013.

Legendary eras and defining moments

The early era (1993–1996)

Andy Hug won the 1996 Grand Prix and became K-1’s best-known figure in Japan, a Swiss karate champion with explosive spinning techniques and a rock-star image that made him a phenomenon throughout Asia.

The Dutch dynasty (1997–2006)

Ernesto Hoost won in 1997, 1998, 2000, and 2002. Peter Aerts won in 1994, 1995, and 1998. Remy Bonjasky won in 2003, 2004, and 2008. Semmy Schilt won four titles in a row from 2005 through 2008, the most dominant run in K-1 history.

Mirko Cro Cop and the Croatian interruption

Mirko Cro Cop won the 2006 Grand Prix. His left high kick, “right leg hospital, left leg cemetery,” became one of the most quoted sayings in combat sports.

K-1 MAX and Buakaw (2004–2011)

Buakaw Banchamek won the MAX title in 2004 and 2006. His rivalry with Japanese fighter Masato is considered one of the most celebrated in K-1 history.
