Overview

What is Krav Maga?

Krav Maga, Hebrew for approximately “contact combat,” is an Israeli self-defense and combat system. It originated in the twentieth century from the experiences of Imrich “Imi” Lichtenfeld and was later developed for military training in Israel. Today, military, security-oriented, and civilian variants exist.

The emphasis is generally on situational awareness, avoiding violence when possible, simple movements, and acting under stress. If a confrontation can no longer be safely avoided, many schools train students to stop a threat, create space, and escape. The precise techniques, grading systems, and training goals vary by organization.
