Finnish Boxing Association

Modern Boxing originated in England, where unarmed self-defense was also practiced in fencing schools in the seventeenth century. The sport's rules changed many times thereafter; its current form is called Olympic boxing.

In Finland, Boxing emerged at the beginning of the twentieth century, and in 1923 the Suomen Nyrkkeilyliitto was founded. The federation uses the slogan that it has been in the boxer's corner since that year. Boxing has been part of the Olympic program since the 1904 St. Louis Games.

The federation runs the national team Boxing Team Finland, with selections for seniors, a challenger team, and the under-15 and under-17 categories, with public selection criteria and its own coaching team. It also provides trainer and referee training, youth development, anti-doping work, and licenses and insurance for athletes.

SNL publishes the competition calendar, age and weight classes, results, and the Finnish rankings, with medal lists from the national championships dating back to 1923. The federation applies World Boxing's competition and referee regulations alongside its own national provisions, including rules for youth and technical boxing.

Responsibility is a separate program: the federation is affiliated with the Finnish sports movement's joint responsibility program based on Reilu Peli, with policies for good governance, a safe environment, equality, the environment and climate, and the fight against doping and match-fixing.

Finland is registered with both World Boxing and European Boxing as a full member, with Kirsi Korpaeus listed as chair.

In Finland, approximately 120 clubs are affiliated, spread throughout the country, from Helsinki and Espoo to Lapland. The federation's English-language page mentions more than one hundred affiliated clubs and over 4,000 members; including fitness boxers, the federation refers to more than 20,000 practitioners. Clubs with the Finnish quality label are designated as Tähtiseura.

Finnish boxers won a total of sixteen Olympic medals. The federation summarizes its values as equality, respect for the individual, openness and honesty, and goal orientation.

Its mission is to serve the boxer: it represents the interests of Finnish boxing and aims to inspire widespread enthusiasm for the sport. Its vision for 2025 to 2028 is to be a successful Olympic sport and become Finland's responsible, leading martial art. According to the federation, boxing can be started at any age, from children and juniors to fitness boxers and competitive athletes.
