Hellenic Boxing Federation

The Hellenic Boxing Federation (Ελληνική Ομοσπονδία Πυγμαχίας, ΕΟΠ) is Greece's national boxing federation. Internationally, it operates as the Hellenic Boxing Federation. Its headquarters are located in Athens.

The federation is headed by Giorgos Gazis as president. The board further consists of first vice president Apostolos Papalexiou, second vice president Panagiotis Koutkas, general secretary Vasileios Vgennas, special secretaries Dimitrios Tsismelis and Konstantinos Oikonomou, treasurer Dimitrios Kagioglou, Theofilos Eleftheriadis as manager of the national teams, and Panagiotis Katsios as equipment manager, supplemented by a representative of the trainers and one of the athletes.

Over the years

History

The federation explicitly associates itself with antiquity. Fistfighting has deep roots in Greece, with figures such as Diagoras of Rhodes and Theagenes of Thasos as symbols of the sport. The federation says it draws inspiration from that heritage and from the values of discipline, endurance, and honor that were central to ancient boxing.

Activities and role

The federation organizes and develops the sport, emphasizing sporting integrity, education and social engagement. It supports athletes with training, facilities and participation in national, international and Olympic competitions, and safeguards the quality of trainers, referees and judges through certification and seminars. It has its own B- and C-level trainer courses.

There are national teams in five categories: men and women, U23, U19, U17 and U15. The federation manages the competition calendar, results and medal summaries, transfers and athletes' points, and requires an annual diagnostic medical examination.

In 2026, the Panhellenic Championships for the youth categories were held in Grevena in Western Macedonia, and Greek boxers won a series of medals at the Greatest Open in Serbia.

The federation is listed in the membership directory of World Boxing as the Hellenic Boxing Federation with the status of full member for Europe, and in European Boxing also as a full member.

Nationally, the special sports recognition is decisive: this recognition by the Greek state is the condition for being officially allowed to organize competitions and participate in competitions.

Why this matters

Impact and meaning

The Greek federation went through a serious governance crisis. The Court of First Instance in Athens appointed a provisional administration with the task of restoring the institutions, after which the federation reapplied for the special sports recognition it had lost.

By decision GGA/20658 of 3 August 2026 of the Greek Secretariat General for Sport, that recognition was restored. This allowed the federation to resume full operations, enabling athletes, clubs and national teams to participate in official competitions without hindrance. President Gazis called it a historic turning point and stressed that the restoration is not an endpoint but the beginning of a new direction, with support for clubs and athletes and a stable framework for the future.

In its vision, the federation emphasizes equality and accessibility, with particular attention to women's boxing and young people from disadvantaged communities, as well as innovation through video analysis and digital platforms.
